The Tape Experiments of William S. Burroughs

Dead Fingers Talk 18-Mar-10
The Tape Experiments of William S. Burroughs

London contemporary art gallery IMT has announced an upcoming exhibition, Dead Fingers Talk, that explores the audio tape experiments of William S Burroughs.

Burroughs is best known for his novel Naked Lunch and his use of "cut-up" or collage writing techniques. He's also been an influential cult figure, though, in the world of music.

He appears on the cover of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper album; he collaborated with Laurie Anderson on the track Sharkey's Night; and he worked with Ministry, John Cale, Donald Fagen, Sonic Youth, Kurt Cobain & U2.

The Dead Fingers Talk exhibit, which will run 28th May – 18th July 2010, will present  two unreleased tape experiments by William Burroughs from the mid 1960's, alongside responses by 23 artists, musicians, writers, composers and curators.

The exhibition includes work by Joe Ambrose, Steve Aylett, Alex Baker & Kit Poulson, Lawrence English, The Human Separation, Riccardo Iacono, Anthony Joseph, Cathy Lane, Eduardo Navas, Negativland, o.blaat, Aki Onda, Jörg Piringer, Plastique Fantastique, Simon Ruben White, Giorgio Sadotti, Scanner, Terre Thaemlitz, Thomson & Craighead, Laureana Toledo and Ultra-red, with performances by Ascsoms and Solina Hi-Fi.

Burroughs' audio experiments were not meant as art, but as pseudo-scientific investigation of sounds.

IMT's announcement of the exhibition makes no mention of a digital release of the exhibit  - so London may be the one place to check out this unique audio exhibit.
