Home Recording Solution For Guitarists

Use the hiss of an amp to place your microphone 13-Aug-10

In this video Chris Baseford, Recording Engineer for The Public Mayhem, shows how artists using home studios can use the hiss and buzz of an amp to place the microphone for the tone they want.

Shifting the microphone around the amp speaker, you can use the hiss of the amp to test the characterstics of the sound. Higher frequency hiss will produce a brighter sound, for chugging metal riffs place the microphone in the position with buzzy lower end frequencies.

I quarter inch my iPod into the amp and play raw guitar direct guitar tracks and find the sweet spot that way. I can detect phasing Problems this way too without shuffling back and forth. I typically use two oktavamod rsm-4 ribbon mics (in a position similar to the Freeman technique)

@toofarpunk It's called "shavering", and some of the best engineers use this technique.

Great tip if you're recording yourself play and can't play and experiment with mic positioning at the same time

that's cool if you're recording hiss. I, however, record guitars.
