Thor Filters, Shaper, Envelope, LFO & Mod Matrix

James Bernard Digs Into Thor 03-Apr-11

Propellerhead's James Bernard is getting to the end of this 52-week long dive into the depths of Reason and Record

In this episode, Barnard looks at Thor and its filters:

With a solid foundation of synth theory and even Thor's fundamentals under your belt, this week we'll be diving deeper into the filter types in Thor - looking at the State Variable Filter, the Comb Filter, and the Formant Filter. You'll also learn about the self-oscillator included with some of these filters. From there we'll move through Thor's semi-modular signal path to see how you can tap into the sound-bending power of the shaper, the mod envelope, and the Modulation Matrix.

As with all of these Synth School videos, the knowledge in here builds heavily off of previous tutorials so if you're jumping in to this one first I can highly recommend looking at past weeks to get a better understanding of the advanced concepts we're covering here.

You can view previous Synth School videos at Propellerhead's YouTube channel.

Cool glad you found it! :)

Spaceear 22-Apr-11 11:49 AM

gotcha thanks heaps for this whole series its been just awesome! Don't know why a search was not picking up week 52 or why I could not see it on the channels entire play list... user error I guess!

PropellerheadSW 21-Apr-11 01:53 AM

PropellerheadSW 18-Apr-11 06:39 PM

I removed your last comment. Disagreeing is totally cool. Debate is totally cool. But keep it respectful... or at least a few notches below offensive personal insults. Thanks, guys. Now you can continue the flaming... :)

tintala 18-Apr-11 05:02 PM

HHHUUUUUUHHHHH? now you are presumptuously putting words in my mouth. opinions ARE like assholes. facto. you hate reason synths yet you love to torture yourself by watching videos about reason synths. lol.

Henkera 18-Apr-11 08:04 AM

Answer #1: Nobody made me king... yet. Any day now, im sure. Answer #2: Because i own and use Reason&Record. In my opinion Reason needs a more refined VA-engine. But im happy for you if you think everything from Propellerheads is the beezneez. I sure dont hope my comment kept you from producing your badass new hitcollection made in rebirth only.

tintala 16-Apr-11 03:08 PM

who made you king of synths, and why the fuck are you here watching videos on sucky reason synths?Guess what, opinions are like assholes.

Henkera 10-Apr-11 12:32 AM

Ive heard awesome music made with "bad" equipment. A SID chip isnt a good chip, but i love the sound. The subtractor is more than qualified to make simple cheapo sound and i really like much of the things the subtractor can do. But the problem is that its supposed to emulate an analog engine and is doing so very poorly. If you HAVE to hook up additional devices or create several subtractors just to make the sound interesting, its not doing its job. Same thing with Thors analog osc.

FortGreene11201 07-Apr-11 11:41 PM

nice vid and info. I have to watch this a few times peace.

harrysadlermusic 07-Apr-11 05:52 PM

I've really loved these vids. Please keep making them. Do not forsake me!

Laserturret 06-Apr-11 11:38 PM

Reason is great for writing verses and choruses but every time I get to the bridge THE TROLLS TRY TO EAT ME!!!

bbraun01 06-Apr-11 02:14 PM

Yet people like you who don't like Reason's workflow/synths/whatever continue coming to videos like this and bashing people who actually use the software. Please, GTFO.

beatlesguyEM 06-Apr-11 05:48 AM

well then read the massive manual and learn how to make your own sound. if you can put the time and effort listening to 52 videos on how to use a poor software, then you prolly have the time to read the whole thing.

skittb89 05-Apr-11 09:44 AM

this video reminds me i just scratched the surface with Reason's Thor!

Henkera 04-Apr-11 04:35 PM

No shit sherlock! Yeah ive heard that crap before, standard line from propellerhead users when people say they dont like the sound from the synths, i used to be one of them. You probably would like the sound of things ive done in Reason, but im not that easily impressed anymore. I like Reason, just hate how the synth engines sound. So i use hardware and VST's that i think sound good. Oh, and btw, the compressors in Reason suck too.

bbraun01 04-Apr-11 03:14 PM

A poor craftsman blames his tools. Synth design in reason is definitely a bit more involved than throwing random parameters into Massive and facerolling your MIDI keyboard.

Henkera 04-Apr-11 07:36 AM

I have no problems to make other softsynths sound good, or at least better. To make a simple basslead with character on any of reasons synths alone is impossible. Ive tried for several years to experiment with different devices. For sounds well hidden in the mix this isnt usually a problem, but when you want a minimalistic sound, theres where the problem really makes itself obvious. There is a reason for Reasons synths being easy on the CPU.

jamesbernardmusic 04-Apr-11 01:15 AM

That's funny. Sorry... I try to be superman.. but it's just not humanly possible for me to do 365 tips... at least for me. ;-)

jamesbernardmusic 04-Apr-11 01:13 AM

They are indeed! New speakers for me... yeah! LOVE them BTW.

IkeProductions89 03-Apr-11 10:51 PM

your basically saying the same thing but the opposite.

Henkera 03-Apr-11 10:48 PM

So what youre saying is, all software is just as good no matter how old the programming is? I have a anti virus program that hasnt been updated since 2001 and my computer keep getting infected. What am i doing wrong!? :P

v1o 03-Apr-11 09:47 PM

Are those KRK rokits in the background?

europlane77 03-Apr-11 09:42 PM

Well you shouldnt stop, because you Can keep on and on and on... Would love more about Sound processing. Like compression and effect like the haas effect. Anything that the pros use..

IkeProductions89 03-Apr-11 09:14 PM

hey guess what! its not the software, its the user :P

SyncrisisVideos 03-Apr-11 07:23 PM

This is a great look into the filters and envelopes. I finally understand what the "self osc" is for! Thanks James.

AuidoWarlock 03-Apr-11 06:51 PM

@JamesBernardMusic:Here's Hoping that the vids will carry on,in some form.If not thanks James you've made Reason/Live even more enjoyable. To me you cannot get a more user simple piece of kit,and the vids were part of the learning process for me.

rockhills 03-Apr-11 05:49 PM

definitely good stuff. hey wasn't there a guy on the prop forums making a thor only tutorial video series? i think ed edit is his name.

Henkera 03-Apr-11 05:26 PM

Guess what guys! Reason synths sucks. Hard to find duller sounding software. Kong is nice though.

Stefan2970 03-Apr-11 02:56 PM

Don't stop making these videoes :) Maybe start something more user requested, so you can cover detailed and very special parts of Reason

richab88 03-Apr-11 01:19 PM

I looked forward to each video and learned a ton. Thanks James - great job!

richab88 03-Apr-11 01:18 PM

Lloydswonderworld 03-Apr-11 12:17 PM

Please don't go after week 52! ... How about a week 53 re-cap... and so on! Kidding :0) Actually a re-cap would be good think of it as a Reason montage.

theoneandonlyhut 03-Apr-11 10:13 AM

Could you make a "sad song tutorial" on week 52 ? :(

EvGBeats 03-Apr-11 09:31 AM

nice

Ca1mdownplz 03-Apr-11 06:47 AM
