Win An MXR Custom Badass '78 Distortion

Visit the Jim Dunlop website to enter the giveaway 10-May-11

Dunlop is kicking off the introduction of the MXR Custom Badass line with the release of the MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion. To celebrate the release, the company is giving 20 pedals away. All you have to do is answer some questions on the Jim Dunlop website – winners will be chosen at random. Here's what Jim Dunlop has to say about the pedal:

The MXR Custom Badass '78 Distortion, a factory modded pedal that roars with huge amp stack tones and old school tube amp distortion, is the first of MXR's Custom Badass line. We took a classic distortion circuit and hot-rodded it to the next level for over-the-top soaring leads and rich, saturated rhythms. With only three knobs, dialing in Badass tone is a cinch. The CRUNCH button allows you to choose between two different modes of diode and LED clipping, boosting the harmonic content of the distortion. The '78 Distortion's wide open amp-like sound sounds great whether it's in front of a clean amp, a slightly dirty amp, or a full on overdriven amp. Under the hood, this high performance machine features top notch circuitry and hardware meant for a lifetime of use.

This is a good pedal. Excellent tweakability. Some complain about the brightness so roll it off. If you were using a dark amp you'd appreciate the brightness you can get with this pedal. If you roll the gain back you get a good low gain boost or crank it for some good old school crunchy distortion. Rawk.

TheCrushSoda 11-Apr-12 12:28 AM

Yeah, if that's what you want to play it's pretty good. Has a nice vintage tone to it. Just wasn't my thing.

anonymoushredder101 08-Apr-12 10:17 AM

So it's good for classic rock and that sort of stuff?

TheCrushSoda 03-Apr-12 08:32 PM

It's definitely not a terrible distortion. It's more of an overdrive though, so if you want those awesome metal or punk tones. Don't get one. As a first distortion though, it's alright though. Better than most Boss distortions you can get for the same price.

anonymoushredder101 03-Apr-12 12:28 PM

Would consider it like a person's "First Ever" Distortion pedal? Or just average?

AvelFantasma 11-Mar-12 08:40 AM

this is a perfect video for it ...short and to the point

TheCrushSoda 05-Mar-12 11:25 AM

I use to have one, I didn't like it too much so I traded it for a Fulltone OCD, which is just a million times better.

journeyquest1 09-Feb-12 09:38 AM

Yes, your pickups on your guitar and a nice clean Fender tube amp is a good starting point.

inanevoyage 20-Jan-12 04:31 PM

I played them side-by-side this week and went home with the MXR.

MrExtraMusical 16-Jan-12 12:48 PM

It's hard to keep these in stock.

stiehlreddog 11-Jan-12 06:08 PM

For all you beginners out there. They forget to tell you they are Playing it probabely with a very expensive Tube amp & a priceless guitar.hahahaha

CCMFilms 09-Jan-12 04:12 AM

Boss Ds-1

hjalmarBuoi 21-Dec-11 09:16 PM

can it beat the TS

valvenos 03-Dec-11 01:50 PM

I liked the bypass best! :)

minedarea 20-Nov-11 11:16 AM

Clearly you don't know what 'tone deaf' means.

bladzerok 04-Nov-11 01:48 AM

lol, i actually bought it since that time too. I didn't intend to buy it for metal purpose, but more for a gritty rock tone. I used it everytime i'm plugged thru my VHT special 6, with my GT-OD as a gain boost.

cjenson72 04-Nov-11 01:16 AM

I have a GT-OD and I love it. Dunno what kinda distortion you're looing for, but this IS NOT a metal pedal. It does give you some nice tones for Skynyrd, April WIne, classic rock kinda stuff

chill3n456 19-Oct-11 03:53 PM

I like this distortion, but would it also be good for punk rock genres or songs by like Green Day, The Strokes, and so on? Or should I consider something else?

Qoooba95 16-Oct-11 06:08 PM

yeah what amp do you play in those demos? sounds overwhelming :D

semiLivedj 11-Oct-11 02:29 PM

Bad Monkey is better! If you like the natural distortion sounds. It is a tube overdrive pedal.I tried them all and BM is the stand alone distortion all in one most natural sounding pedal out there.

RoyvanRikken 09-Sep-11 08:54 PM

I've got mine last week. First i ran it between my guitar and amp wich is an Blackstar HT-5 halfstack. That didn't sound good. But then i put it in the amp's effectsloop. MAN !!! It rips faces !!! Maybe it didn't sound good between amp and guitar because my guitar has very high output pickups.

bluesman12125 27-Aug-11 12:57 PM

i've tried one out for an entire week and did a gig too and it really delivers as an overdrive and as a disto. and it's cheap ;)

DJMC141 23-Aug-11 05:47 PM

What amp are you using for this demo?

illeistheshizzle 23-Aug-11 01:26 PM

Believe me, slightest turn makes big difference

illeistheshizzle 23-Aug-11 01:25 PM

You gotta be shitting me?! I bought this pedal ,went home, played for a while then i ordered a blacktop telecaster. 2 days later i watch this vid and they have the same setup? haha Except i have an overdrive aswell :D

ItsAKamikazeAttack 19-Aug-11 06:29 PM

Just got one today. Huge range, great high gain cut. Highly recommend it.

MeatBusiness 14-Aug-11 07:26 AM

is it good for songs like Led Zeppelin's and Bon Jovi's?

Lane400802 31-Jul-11 07:32 PM

I kind of like it, sounds real nice

ChrisDN 28-Jul-11 06:49 PM

What amp was this played through?

whatsitallabouthey 24-Jul-11 08:03 PM

He forgot to mention the stage-ready LED.

Pannemat 19-Jul-11 11:29 PM

This is exactly how pedal reviews should be made. Tempo!

jimidrix15 18-Jul-11 09:20 PM

that's shit distortion, he had to turn distortion up to full to make it sound difference!

journeyquest1 18-Jul-11 04:51 AM

For some reason i thought the Maxon came first? I do like the sounds ive heard on the reviews compared to the Ibanez.

Ningirsutyr 17-Jul-11 11:50 PM

Maxon OD 08 is a take on the Ibanez Tubescreamer TS808 B-| It's better to use the original if you like it so much ;-|

TheTylerGeissler 14-Jul-11 03:49 AM

I may just buy this pedal. Nice Tele too.

rgmanica 10-Jul-11 04:22 AM

What guitar is being played?

Guitar8870 01-Jul-11 01:36 PM

@Aeroman1996 Dont throw it away, you can still use it 4 blues or anything else ...

WASD9ox 01-Jul-11 06:02 AM

@Aeroman1996 keep both but this would proably be better for using live because its try by pass. that's what i think anyway. and it all comes down to personal taste

journeyquest1 27-Jun-11 11:32 AM

What was wrong with it? It cant be as bad as the DS1 that was given to me. Some people prefer the OD pedals. I dont know about the 78 but i like the Maxon OD 08. I havent heard any really good distortion pedals. Maybe the Rat reissue?

cjenson72 27-Jun-11 04:54 AM

I've got both, a Tele with Seymour Duncans, and a Les Paul with BurstBuckers and this pedal isn't what it's supposed to be. Like I said, it last 2 hours outta the box and it was ready to go back to the store.

BIRDINTHEHOUZE 25-Jun-11 08:22 PM

really? huh thanks for telling me cuz i was totally gonna buy one

JBL8863 21-Jun-11 07:08 PM

Your not alone...many people buy pedals and sell them all the time...I've been there and done that. Some are worth holding on to if they perform but I wouldn't buy them just to have a bunch on a pedal board...

I pug the guitar into a chain too...wah-distortion- EQ -phase90- flanger- goes in front to the amp...I use a reverb and delay pedal through the effects loop only. Nothing else goes into the effects loop it sounds better this way.

EVHiii head using 1960 full stack...

ElTone43 21-Jun-11 04:43 AM

This guy is not quite an ass donkey retard when just talking

EddieMotorhead 19-Jun-11 08:37 AM

I made a hasty buying , was no other pedal available at the shop and didnt have time to test it out but the seller claimed it could give a clean boost, was thinking in the similar way you can do to an Bluesbreaker while keeping only the volume knob active and sounding clean without using distortion, i might have done a wrong choice but i'am gonna test it when i get my new cab for my Marshall.

JBL8863 19-Jun-11 04:25 AM

Pretty much any pedal with a gain knob will boost your input signal. So yes that would work using this pedal...

If your just looking to boost your signal I'd suggest using an MXR 6 band EQ...It's will boost the signal and allows you to control the bass-mid-treble...Way better if this is what your looking to do.

EddieMotorhead 18-Jun-11 12:44 PM

Can you use the pedal as a volume boost by having the distortion knob at 0 and using the pedal clean sounding? Recently bought it and havent had time to test it yet so just wondering so i haven't made a bad buying now since it was the only pedal the seller has that he claimed could do an volume/clean boost :(

JBL8863 11-Jun-11 07:45 AM

I bought the MXR distortion+ and recently sold it...It's distortion tones sounded like a OD with mild fuzz rather than a heavy distortion sound. It worked better as a boost than a distortion. I think this pedal is similar sounding with a tone knob vs the Dist.+, It might be the same circut just a differant paint job.

I keep telling myself I need a differant tone but my amp works fine as is...EVHiii head wth celestion greenback & G12-75T in a 4X12

motokev 09-Jun-11 08:13 AM

I have this pedal. It sounds like a good distorsion pedal. With the BLUE push in at the top, it cleans up and becomes a fatter tone, and is more of a OD pedal. Very good pedal for the $

hays30 08-Jun-11 12:02 AM

Has anybody heard anything comparing this pedal to a wayhuge fat pickle or fat sandwich?

Guitar8870 06-Jun-11 08:03 PM

What guitar is that?
