Controllerism With James Bernard

Using Custom MIDI Controllers WIth Propellerhead Reason 15-May-11

Propellerhead guru James Bernard has finished up his 52-video series on Propellerhead Reason + Record, but he's still on a roll with his tutorials.

His latest tutorial video takes a look at some of the history surrounding controllerism, some of the latest controllers and getting started with them in Reason.

Bernard notes:

It's great that Reason's interface emulates physical hardware but what if you actually want to use it with physical hardware. The world of controllerism only continues to grow year after year. The new boutique hardware controller manufacturers paired with the explosion of iOS controller apps means that you have an infinite set of choices for your live set up when using Reason.

More Reason tutorials are available at the Propellerhead YouTube channel.

Propellerheads should seriously consider developing a DJ-style controller compatible software. It'd put them heads above Ableton...especially since I love Reason's interface.

Any mixer-style controller will do. A cheap but very capable one would be the Behringer BCF2000, it even has motorized faders. If you got more to spend, check out the VCM-600 by Vestax for example.

well that will be some shit if it doesn't do that.... check the serato forums - youtube comments aren't your best bet

Wow. Thanks so much for this detailed video. I think I finally have the faith to purchase this software after 4 years of not using it.

JustinMPerea 15-May-11 09:40 PM

does anyone know if you can use fx from ableton to effect one of the decks in serato?

jinternational 15-May-11 08:24 PM

Thanks for the tips! That MIDI Fighter looks badass! I wonder though if there is a recommended dedicated controller out there for the SSL Mixer in Record?

vileguile4 15-May-11 08:03 PM

those hardware controllers you can build yourself from Livid are almost too cheap to not cause suspicion in my eyes .. i mean.. it's dirt cheap :s build a little wooden frame looking like your fav vsti, nail hard plastics to cover it, drill holes etc for the controllers .. almost done :D

Rane909 15-May-11 08:03 PM

WiiMote FTW!
