Stompbox Compressor For Bassists

MXR M87 Bass Compressor is released 19-Jul-11

Dunlop has announced the release of the MXR M87 Bass Compressor that was previewed at the NAMM show in January. Here's what they have to say about it...

We took all of the functions of a classic recording studio compressor and put them into a stompbox the size of a Phase 90, allowing you to take it anywhere, from rehearsals to the stage. Its array of controls--Attack, Release, Ratio, Input, and Output--allow you to fine-tune your sound, from subtle peak limiting to hard, squashed compression. Its transparency allows your full dynamic range to shine through until your signal reaches the compression threshold, indicated by the ten highly visible gain-reduction status LEDs. With its CHT™ Constant Headroom Technology, you have heaps of headroom for clear performance.

Acclaimed bass player Billy Sheehan had this to say about it: "Finally, a five-knob compressor in a pedal. I'm a compression aficionado, and this box kills! All parameters are tweakable."

The video shows Dunlop bass product specialist Darryl Anders demoing the Bass Compressor through an Aguilar DB 751 amp.

To celebrate the release of theBass Compressor Dunlop has announced a huge US-only giveaway of bass gear.

Thats great .Nice playing too !!

ruaridouglas 30-Apr-12 01:08 PM

The simple way of putting it, it evens out the notes played on all the strings, y'know how when you get to your D and G string, the notes can sound thinner and lacking beef, as it were, a compressor just keeps it all nice and even! Someone would be able to explain better than that, read into it.

Ozymandius666 30-Apr-12 01:52 AM

The one I got for my guitar has been mind blowingly good. EXTREMELY transparent, and I'd suggest it any day!

Warsel 29-Apr-12 10:24 PM

beautiful video!

Maxraven16 26-Apr-12 05:47 AM

Can anyone tell me how well does this work on an Electric-Acoustic Bass???

acefrehley813 17-Apr-12 02:20 AM

Can anyone tell me exactally what a bass compression pedal does??????

wasmake 08-Apr-12 11:14 AM

how about the sound if I use fender p-bass?what could be setting?

intrsoul 03-Apr-12 08:26 PM

..any disadvantages to using on guitar? I've heard it's "an 1176 in a pedal", which the controls suggest. dream come true if that is a proper assessment...

LEVALmusic 06-Mar-12 03:37 AM

Daryl Does it again Another must buy pedal

mjac28 19-Feb-12 01:53 AM

Is this Randy Jackson?

ThieleM 06-Feb-12 12:32 PM

xXMatthewCoreXx 15-Jan-12 06:14 PM

damn good compressor, I want one, NOW!

JackDoubleBass 12-Jan-12 09:59 PM

Hello Darryl, i use the M87 for one week now and i have a bit of a problem using the 20:1 setting with fast attack as mentioned in the user manual. Without any led lith i hear very much distortion. Can you tell what goes wrong?

ThePyroJoke 12-Jan-12 04:11 PM

What is the bag brand is it? :)

FatFingers4 29-Dec-11 05:07 AM

well you've got a good point. i know tim commerford(RATM) uses an aphex punch factory compressor. for me personally it adds a little spice to my tone.

oplah93 29-Dec-11 04:43 AM

i dunnno man, why spend 150 bucks on a pedal with limited effects than spend more money on a really nice amp that can compress and even more

FatFingers4 29-Dec-11 02:25 AM

Bassist use compressor pedals to kind of "Beefen up" our bass tone, or get a "punchier" tone from compressor pedals. bassist also use it to balance out different playing styles. for example a bass player plays softly, then switches to a aggressive slap bass line with out distorting the P.A. speakers at a venue. more than likely he is using a compressor pedal. hope this helps. a compressor pedal is probably the most used pedal among bassist, yet it is a vary subtle effects pedal!

oplah93 22-Dec-11 11:06 PM

somebody needs to expain to me what a bass compressor is supposed to do

Samyaza69 18-Dec-11 08:10 PM

Very good piece of equipment! Lovely!

Starscream513 07-Nov-11 06:58 AM

Im new to this compressor stuff. Do you live this on all the time or something?

rossmorris 17-Oct-11 04:50 PM

Trust MXR to bring out a decent compressor. Spent a long time waiting for a propper compressor pedal with real controls and a decent Gain Reduction read out.

maplewoodstudio 03-Oct-11 12:33 PM

Hi guys, what's the signal flow here? Sounds killer I thought.

Stick

SensibleMusician 07-Sep-11 02:51 PM

GREAT demo and it looks like a great product. Please MORE of both. Pedal looks great.Couple questions: why no short attack demo? Any comp sounds smooth with a long attack. This makes me think either this comp is grabby/ugly or the demonstrator just doesn't understand the pedal? And why is this marketed only to bass? Is the high end response bad? Power consumption?

vincenzomauer88 30-Aug-11 10:56 PM

THIS is a great demo. No talki, but you know what going on. Perfect demo for compression. MORE PLEASE!

pufifa 30-Aug-11 10:16 AM

so this (pedal) is the shit?

nolliefIip 29-Aug-11 07:35 AM

That's some love makin' music.

Direksone 23-Aug-11 10:22 PM

nom nom nom me want!

scarred2112 03-Aug-11 10:10 AM

Dammit guy, you got me first with your M288 Bass Octave Deluxe & M82 Bass Envelope Filter (which are both fantastic on their own, but used together in a "funk" tonal situation seem to be made for each other!) and now after viewing the video on your new Bass Compressor... let's just say I very well might be in the market for a new compressor.

MXR, I just can't quit you... ;-)

Adrift00 28-Jul-11 05:42 AM

This thing looks and sounds so slick.

BassMonstrum 22-Jul-11 10:44 AM

Is it just me or did the sound become boomy when the compressor was engaged? I usually have a compressor to eliminate boominess, not enhance it.

SURREALCLG 21-Jul-11 01:06 PM

seems freakin awesome!!!!!!

brejorato 20-Jul-11 09:17 PM

Thanks for the great demo Darryl. I enjoyed your playing as much as seeing and hearing the features of this new, versatile bass pedal. I'll probably buy it.

THRASHMANHEAVY 20-Jul-11 08:58 PM

i like the leds i don't like the compessor

OpinionMan101 18-Jul-11 08:55 PM

He makes bass look so easy...

robdelabassist 18-Jul-11 05:22 PM

one guy doesn't like compressors

mattlittlej 18-Jul-11 04:00 PM

Most normal compressors roll off the low end, which makes them unusable for bassists. Bass comps retain the low end.

aldap69 18-Jul-11 03:55 PM

maybe because the black guys are better bass players than white guys even more than playing boring music metal

ManelRuivo 18-Jul-11 05:54 AM

haha!!! I KNEW IT!!! the glasses delated him! hehe... i aways wondered if i was the only one that had interest in the making ofs! maybe all the musicians had much fun seeing the record sessions. :^D

bassist13 18-Jul-11 04:48 AM

Correct

Evin07 17-Jul-11 07:28 AM

I honestly don't hear a difference... Is this really worth $200 for a tad bit of clarity in sound?

raymondwwe 16-Jul-11 07:23 PM

Mike Lull M5V

raymondwwe 16-Jul-11 07:22 PM

I think it's iGig!! very nice case!!

ManelRuivo 16-Jul-11 05:13 PM

it was this guy that recorded the basses for the 2 first games of guitar hero, wasnt he?

fryBASS 16-Jul-11 12:57 PM

nope. there are probably just as many white guys (if not more, these days) that play slap. get over it.

McFunkyy 16-Jul-11 11:41 AM

MXRs pedals are awesome !

zanscath 16-Jul-11 09:06 AM

Why do some MXR pedals have holes near their pots?

bonehead00764 15-Jul-11 09:51 PM

PS- Respect MUST be given to those who have put in their 10,000 hours of service.

Solid bass player here!

bonehead00764 15-Jul-11 09:49 PM

(BTW) have you listened to his tracks? They truly speak for themselves!

"how stereotipical is that a black guy is playing slap bass" @Metallin Now a days, it's about as typical as white guy playing bass with funk band ; or as typical as some uneducated half wit claiming to be a musician who can't spell the word typical ....short answer is: Not so typical, but that's just my two cents.
