The Roland Jupiter 8 was the flagship of the Roland range between 1981 and 1985. It was one bad-ass synth even though only 2000 where produced.

Just about everyone in synth pop used one; Duran Duran, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Depeche Mode, Michael Jackson, Vince Clarke, Howard Jones, Heaven 17, Prince, Tears for Fears, and more recently; Underworld, Moby, William Orbit and No Doubt.

The things that made this baby so epic was really that you could split the keyboard and play two sounds, fast envelopes, the combination of a non-resonant high-pass filter and a resonant low pass filter. It really has the capacity to be both phat and crystal.

Arturia have not only recreated this monster as a soft synth but also added some groovy new features:

Galaxy and the JP
The first is "Galaxy" which allows you to choose from different LFO types and intertwine them together into a single unique modulation source, giving a new evolving element to the sound of the Jupiter 8.

Secondly, a step sequencer which is also an assignable modulation source, it allows for easily generated patterns to be used to control the many interesting parameters of the sound. Last but not least, each voice has its own suite of effects which can be inserted into the main synthesizer signal path in each voice. Key parameters from each effect can be modulated by chosen sources, adding a new contemporary dimension to the traditional subtractive synthesis sound of the original Jupiter 8.

    The main features are:
  • More than 400 high quality and innovative sounding presets
  • Up to 32 voices of polyphony, and a Unison mode
  • A unique audio structure coming with 2 oscillators per voice (16 oscillators in total), 2 LFO’s, 2 filters and 2 envelopes.
  • Keyboard split and layer
  • A set of Analog Sounding Effects: Dual Delay, Phaser, Flanger, all three being largely modulatable by any audio source in the synth.
  • 2 digital effects, X and Y.
  • Additional Live-oriented Step-sequencer, additional Galaxy module for advanced modulations
  • Set to Control with your external MIDI keyboard in just a few clicks.
  • Full compatibility with major formats and hosts on Mac OS X and Windows XP (VST, AU, RTAS)

80's throw back Shorn Rah gives it the low down, cuts a few shapes and generally gets into the spirit of the thing. So what's Arturia's emulation like and what does that mad galaxy thing sound like ?

Go splash on some lip gloss, comb you hair into a sideways bouffant quiff, shoulder pads and or leg-warms also good sit back pout, pose and enjoy the review.
