At the heart of it
At the heart of StudioPro is the Remix Studio, a 'live' performance environment where compositions take shape. This is the screen with the two virtual decks and assorted buttons seen in most of the ads for Mixman, though at first glance it looks more like an old-fashioned reel-to-reel tape recorder. Indeed, given the way sound elements are combined and overlaid, the multitrack tape recorder analogy is perhaps more accurate.

As with other re-mixing programs, Mixman StudioPro relies on some pretty fancy beat-matching and time-stretching technology to work its magic, and if you've ever laboured with a conventional sampler/sequencer arrangement, you'll appreciate just how magical that can seem. Your basic mix is essentially a collection of up to 16 sounds together with effects, performance parameters and associated settings.

Sounds can be imported or recorded for use in the mix and then locked (so that they continue to loop) or left unlocked and introduced as individual events. As you'll see from the screen shot, the range of parameters is extensive to say the least. In addition to the transport controls you'll find pitch, tempo, panning and volume knobs, cross-fader and track cut/copy/past buttons all close to hand and reproduced through Mixman's superb graphics. editing screen In the control area below the left-hand deck you'll find one of the most innovative features: the Wideband Audio Real-time Processor (WARP) - which enables you to control multiple effects as part of your performance. By clicking and dragging on the WARP control display you can add effects in real time and change them by clicking on the numbered presets. Programming effects is also possible, but this takes place in separate page known as the FX Studio. Here, you'll find an impressively diverse range of programs which can be tweaked to your heartÃŒs content. As with everything else on Mixman, the interface is superbly conceived and intuitive to use.

The place you do have to roll up your sleeves and get down to a little hard work is the Editing Studio. This has more than a passing resemblance to a conventional sequencer, but again, clever use of graphics makes it very easy to see what's going on and to edit sounds using a range of tools which, as in the Remix Studio, are conveniently placed down either side of the screen.
