JL Cooper CS-32|
Drive On Through
Now I earlier mentioned the mapping of MIDI data and functions to best suit your software of choice. JL Cooper have written a spiffing OSX utility using Core MIDI, which allows total redefinition of every CS-32 function. Essentially, you create Keysets that take the fixed incoming controller messages from the CS-32 and map them to user defined MIDI commands that are then sent on to your software. The user interface is very simple to use and JL Cooper are adding Keysets to their online library on a regular basis. The only problem with this in the MIDI version at least, is that you only get sixteen MIDI channels on one MIDI port, which means that say I wanted to use the CS-32 to control 32 faders in Logic Audio (which respond to control 7), I can’t map more than 16 channels of faders, all sending control 7, without first doing some extra mapping from within Logic’s Environment. Fortunately this isn’t too much of a hassle in Logic but it may be less simple in other software apps.

All in all it’s hard not to like the CS-32, something this small is hard to criticize – kind of like being nasty to small children, but the smallness of the faders and buttons can make it a little fiddly to use. However, considering it’s compact size and plethora of controls it’s a bit of a miracle to get all this into a unit of this size. The OSX support is great and really a must for a fixed assignment unit such as this, JL Cooper tell us that Windows mapping software is in development too.
The bottom line is that if you need a small surface area controller, you’ll be hard pressed to find one with so many functions at this price.
