Installation
I installed the Trigger Finger on a Mac G4 laptop and found to my joy that it is USB class compliant as stated - so you just plug it in and it's ready to go (as long as you have OS X 10.2.8 or higher). No additional driver installation. Windows users are not quite so lucky, while it can be plugged in for instant gratification, if you want to use it with multiple applications, you'll need to install the Multi-client driver supplied on the CD, according to the Quick Start Guide, this doesn't appear to be too onerous a task.

Setup
Trigger Finger comes with 16 memory locations for storing your pad and controller setups with all parameters accessible from the front panel via four large multi-function buttons. To assign a note to a pad, you enter edit mode by hitting the memory and Prog Change buttons simultaneously, LED's light above each to make it clear that you are in edit mode. Now, just grab the first knob marked C1/ Note /Min and twiddle until the pad is transmitting the desired note. Bear in mind that all knobs and faders are only 128 step resolution so it can be tricky to home in on the specific note you need, the merest tweak can jump you more than one step, so you need to be sensitive.

The Enigma Editor (click on image to enlarge)
The good news is that there is an editor available for both Mac + PC called Enigma, you'll need to register with the M-Audio website to get hold of it, but the process is fast and painless. The Enigma package also serves as an editor for a number of other M-Audio devices, you just launch it and select the Trigger Finger from the list and downloaded the current set of patches without a hitch. Nice work M-Audio, always good to have something that just works, even if it isn't the most elegant looking application.

Pad parameters

Default patches include setups for the obvious candidates such as GM, XG, Ableton, Reason ReDrum etc, There's also a chromatic assignment should you want to program pitched lines, used in conjunction with the transpose fader (edit mode-> fader 1) you can quickly whiz through +/- two octaves, Nice feature this, as it can be a real PITA to quickly audition a keyboard full of drum sounds any other way.

As well as assigning note and velocity information to the pads, they can also transmit pressure information - also assignable per pad, this again is possible from the front panel, although you'll again need to be dexterous to dial up the right one
