It’s always worth checking the manufacturer’s website for the latest drivers – sure enough there was an updated version on the http://www.midiman.com site, which was downloaded and installed. Also there is a FAQ which is useful – I found out that it’s recommended to upgrade your Windows Media Player to v.7 (the installation had zapped my earlier version).

Set The Controls...
Once the card is installed, an M Audio icon appears in the Windows Control Panel and on your desktop - the Delta range shares a common Control Panel utility, which gives you access to all the user-configurable aspects of the soundcard – and there are quite a few!

First up is the Mixer section [Fig.1], which gives you fader control of all eight of the Wave Outputs, grouped in pairs, together with SPDIF in, and eight Hardware inputs 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8. Each mixer input can be individually panned, solo’d and muted, and there is a Stereo Link checkbox for each pair. It all works pretty well, except for what appears to be a bug in the programming – if you solo an input, all the others are muted, which is what you’d expect; uncheck the Solo input, though, and all others remain muted – hardly useful.

Next page is the Patchbay/Router section [Fig.2] which displays five pairs of outputs (H/W 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 and S/ PDIF Out) and lets you route various inputs to each. The Monitor Mixer can be routed to H/W Out 1/2 and the H/W Out S/PDIF, so you can set up both analogue and digital monitor mixes.
