At first the CS-80V appears a little confusing, if you open it up with the Multi and Matrix areas visible you would be forgiven for simply searching through the factory sound banks and never really delving in too deeply, but for the brave vast riches await.

Once you have a basic understanding of how the synthesis lines work and have familiarised yourself with the various controls the CS-80V becomes one of the most powerful synths I have ever used. The sonic possibilities are endless and each sound is delivered with a warmth and tone you almost could doubt is coming from a piece of software.

The 400 included presets will give you an idea of what it is capable of, whether you need bass, pads, weird sound effects or even a convincing electric piano they are all easily found and then some.

It doesn't have the same in your face toughness as the Gmedia products do, but you wouldn't really want it to. The CS-80V is a great all rounder and a definite complement to anyone's creative arsenal.

The obvious pay off is that this beast is a little processor hungry. I started this review on my trusty old 450mhz Mac G4 running Logic 6 but soon found I would have to decide between using this synth or getting my other midi and audio tracks to run in sync properly. So I bought a new computer! It was about time anyway and I am now running a dual 1.25Ghz G4 with both OS9 and OSX available.

Under OS9 I have to turn one processor off as I run a Digidesign Mix system, but even so the CS-80V runs smoothly (although only in Logic!) and I don't seem to have any midi/audio sync problems even with a dozen or so audio tracks and a number of other VST instruments.

Using OSX and both processors I can run about 10 instances of the CS-80V in addition to a couple of Atmospheres, a Stylus and an Imposcar! Since Logic introduced the freeze function running this many at once shouldn't occur too often, but it's nice to know you can.
