Buyer contacts seller and offers to send a cheque for higher amount.
Seller sends a cheque for a higher amount and requests the difference to be sent back with some compensation.
Cheque is counterfiet, bank retrieves the funds from seller, Nigerian crook rides off into the sunset with the swag.

Simple steps to follow
Get a land line number
Get a street address
Talk to the person - if something doesn't feel right - don't do the deal
Where possible, send a cheque via postal service - if a crime is committed, it's a Federal offence
Use an Escrow service such as Safebuyer
If a deal is too god to be true - it probably is.
