Well, for those of you who use this unit (or the 8x8, as in my case) you are really missing out on what a powerfull MIDI patchbay should be. Being a user of an old pro patchbay (the 8portSE, which costed my half as much irconically) I was shocked to see that the midisport 8x8 didn't support some of the most basic patchbay functions that I used on a daily basis. Such as 1) You can't control what routes to the computer (ie the computer should be a seperate patch for both OUT and IN), 2) You can't filter by MIDI channel (ie you only want channel 1 to go out from your sequencer), 3) You can't filter by "message" filtering (ie if you ONLY want note on/off data or sysex data or aftertouch etc. (or a combination). 4) You can't do "channel bumping" a trivial task for the software, but useful (albeit rarely).

The only reason I went out to buy a new patchbay is because my current one is so old that it doesn't work for my new win2K box. It's incredible to pay twice as much for less than half the functionality.

I find the complaints of these units interesting. I have a Midisport 2x2 and a 4x4 running simultaneously, and have has no problems at all. Perfect timing even across units, driver is great (PC of course). Super little units

Bought a midi sport usb 2x2 8 months ago for my then brand-new mac. First it took 2 months before they had a driver that actually sort of worked, and it stayed that way since then. Come on, i've had this interface for 8 month now and it is still not working, mainly the mac drivers do not handle sysex data. So i can't update the operating system of my synths by fear of wrecking them completely... And i still have to use my old home-made midi backup utils for linux that i run on that old pc with a crappy 10$ interface. Midiman mac drivers suck big time. Unsatisfied customer here. I don't understand why the store where i bought it still sells them... Midiman mac drivers suck big time (yes i can say that again :P)

i'm thinking about using my mc500 again to backup my data...

I think the Midisport is an excellent interface. Some have complained that the timing is off making the unit practically unusable. Well here's some things to think about. I had been using the 4 x 4 for months with no problems. I later upgraded to a promise Ultra 66 ATA controller to speed up my hard drive transfer rate. After doing so I had nothing but timing problems with the 4 x 4. I got rid of the card and tried the Maxtor Ultra 100 ATA controller card which turns out to be a repackaged Promise card. I immediately thought I would have the same problem. Come to find out I didn't. I have had no problems at all since switching the the Ultra 100 card. Point I'm making is that the timing problem may not be the USB Midisport directly but a combination with other hardware you may have on the system. So if you are having problems with the Midisport then this may be of some help.

Hardware: Pentium 3 550MHz Promise Ultra 100 ATA card Sound Blaster PCI 128 Pinnacle Studio + DC 10 (Vid Cap) 20 GB Maxtor Hard Drive

Timing sucks. Timing drifted when I sent midi clock to one of my synths. I actually went back to using my old Portman 4x4, with the parellel port interface.
