First if you can't record on tracks 7&8 it's because you record compression is set to MAS and not MT1 or MT2. MT1 has a slightly better sound quality than MT2 but both sound pretty good. It is tricky to use without a manual but if you mess with it enough you'll figure it out. It's part of the fun. I use mine with Sonar software as a control surface and it works great.

Does anyone know of a digital recorder with a large drive that can record synths on ALL 8 channels and does track bouncing easily? If i could find such a unit, i would (gladly) sell this!
Don't get me wrong -- I really like this unit, but the limitations are very frustrating!

GOOD POINTSS: Great sound, easy to use (for recording),
POOR POINTS: Channels 7 & 8 cannot be used for instrument input -- "optical" input only. Track bouncing is a nightmare.
