Hah, whoops, messed up my review with a typo in the last line, here's the correction:

All in all, you "can't" go wrong dropping $300 on this app.

Wow, this a really tight program. I've been using Reason for more than a year and a half now, upgrading to 2.0 within days of it's release, and I really can't imagine where my music production would be at without it. I have let go of some hardware I never thought I could live without because of this app also. The new Malstrom is the real kicker for me in 2.0. As a synth it is really unique, and it is equally great as an effect unit, it can really help to phatten and freak out stuff you run through it (I personally like to hook it up on an aux send on a mixer).

The only thing I was disappointed with was the lack of improvement in the effects units, but what's there isn't bad if you know how to use it.

Also, I really would like midi out.

People complain about lack of VST, but I don't miss it. I'd rather have a stable app. Reason has never crashed on me. Can't say that about any other program I own (except for maybe some text editors). It's the only app I am comfortable running for live sets, even on my win98SE setup.

This app probably isn't for everybody, but I have to say, it's exactly what I have been looking for in terms of electronic music production ever since I started out 4 years ago (with a drum machine and monosynth).

Here's a link to my tracks:

I'm not afraid to back up my words with my sounds, almost every track on there has been produced in Reason (with either Wavelab or T-racks for mastering), except for the last bunch on the bottom, and 2 others mixed in with the rest.

All in all, you can go wrong dropping $300 on this app.

Ive been using Reason since 1.0, and have been nothing but happy with it, almost to the point where i dont use my hardware anymore. Its just so easy to load up this one program, add a synth, drum machine, sampler, and lay down some tracks, and not have to worry about assigning voices, dumping patches, etc. True there is some things it lacks, like more effects, the distortion isnt that great, but if you want angry distortion filter your sound thru the maelstrom synth. The sampler as well the nnxt is now very powerful, multiple layers, velocities, filters, modulation, seperate outs for other layers to be processed differently. And soon the Akai sound support will be here, that opens this sampler up even more. overall this program is easy to use, powerful, and helps with creativity, it doesnt hold you back. My only complaints are, i really wish they would add midi out, and vst support. It makes no sense not to. the sequencer in Reason is far easier to use than cubase, and i like it better, i would love to control my external gear with this sequencer. And picture using spektral delay as one of the effect inserts, or even the pro-53. Software is not vintage, and therefore holding it back is not changing history, changing for the better is opening it up for others to use. Reason is advertised as a Stand alone music station software. Which it it, to an extent, want to make your own rex files, buy recycle, want use external gear, and vsti's buy cubase or similar. So its stand alone to a certain extent, but its unfortunatley setup so that if you want to expand on your skills, you have to spend more money. Very sad that fruityloops, a 99$ software, has midi out, and supports, vst instruments and effects, whats this saying about the future of Reason if they dont address these issues, ill still use it, but will it be the center of my studio? only when these two hang=ups are fixed, then Reason will fully invade my studio. a 9/10 until this happens
