I think these units are brilliant for what they are. No frills, easy to use (once you get used to the style of operation) and very reliable in my experience. The FX are very poor by today's standard but for basic, high quality recording and editing - brilliant!

When I bought this new ($1800) when it first came out, I thought this was going to be one of the best pieces of equipment I had ever known. I wanted to get away from the old reliable Fostex 80 that I had for 10 years and go digital. Make a long story short, I recorded the best session ever for the band with 5 songs on the Jaz drive. When it came to mixdown, I started to get a "hard drive error". Keep in mind, this is before software rev 2 was even out. I ended up performing a fix disk or something, and it wiped out the entire project, and I retired from music for the next 5 years. You would think that a company would emphasize the media as the most important component in the system. Turns out that they cheaped out on the jaz drive. Anyway, great idea, the dps, but it was not properly tested. I can't begin to tell you how infuriating it was to lose that (1998) music, it made me sick. Later I learned to replace the jaz drive with a scsi drive etc, upgrade the software, but Akai should have been held responsible for those early failures. I will never buy another Akai product after that experience.

Hia guys, i just bid on one of these on ebay (before reading all of your negative reviews i might add!). If i win it, will i be able to use it well enough to basically just write songs on it? and is there any way i can attach it to my computer to save the songs i record?

Any help would be greatly appreciated Cheers Chris

I've been using this thing for almost 6 years now, I've gone through 2 hard drives... It's a very nice unit once you learn how to use it. But it's technology is out of date by now surely. Beats those analog tape recorders though.

I recently used a dps12i for the first time, sound quality was great, terrible fiddly eq and awful fx sections. Checked my recording all good, switched it back on day after and it has LOST 4 tracks of data, if it were mine I would smash it to pieces with a hammer, it belongs to a friend who seemed all too willing to loan it out, I will return it to him and reccomend he puts it in the dishwasher as this can only improve performance.
