The most imporant thing for Cubase 3.X users to know: use version 3.7 R2 at all costs! There is only one site that I know of at the moment where you can consistantly download it and that is Steinberg in Germany. 3.6 will drive you mad. That is the version that gives Steinberg its 'Cubase always crashes so I'm switching to Logic' reputation. Sure, 3.7 R2 occasionally locks when you keep it on without doing anything for 30 minutes, but you shouldn't be wasting so much energy anyways! I've found Cubase to be very consistant, especially after I edit my studio setup just the way I wanted.

Pros: Great with Audio in connection with Wavelab. Plug-in support unsurpassed in that you can find all kinds of effects from all kinds of places on the Internet. Mixing screen is a delight to use and watch.

Cons: MIDI editor takes a little fudging - I can't seem to be able to undo my velocity and transpose mistakes. Also unable to edit velocities of one note when two notes are played on the same beat - editing velocity will edit both notes concurently (so you have to move one note, edit it, then move it back) [i bought logic solely because i HOPED it would remedy this but was disuaded from using it because it is simply not as easy to configure the perfect studio as with Cubase]. One other important flaw - if you want to use the Studio editor and set up your MIDI studio so you can edit all your synth from the PC, you will have to be able to find .dev files on the Internet or from Cubase for each synth. There will have be some smart programmer out there that has taken it upon himself to write the .dev for your synths, because you will have to be a ninja to use D-Maker (Device Maker). No one has done this for my new XV-5080 so I've had to edit patches on the hardware itself. Logic integrates with SoundDiver, yet in my experience SoundDiver is buggy and will not work well with every synth.

Aside from this, I have done great things with MIDI and have no trouble manipulating Cubase to give me what I want to hear.

I wrote an extensive article on the above subject at my site on http://www.tweakheadz.com. VST is darn cool. More suited for rewire and dance/techno-ish mixes than the others. However, if I were doing a film score, Logic would be the only thing I'd run. More info on my site.

Well, I've been running Cubase VST on my carefully-configured Windows 98/SE system for three weeks now and have yet to have it toast out on me. Now, mind you, this system is configured ONLY for digital audio - no off-brand cheapo stuff anywhere in it. I run 4-6 hours at a time, sometimes all weekend, and have yet to do anything that wrecks the system. I'm using an Audiowerks card for I/O, I suspect that having a solid audio card makes a LOT of difference - don't bother with things like a Soundmasher for your recording or playback or you'll lose big-time.

The learning curve was steep for this ex-Cakewalk user, but once you come up to speed it all makes its own perverse sense. It's easier to learn than Logic, which I've fiddled with a bit, although Logic is more powerful in some areas.

HI, I USE CUBASE VST 24 ON 500 MHZ 256 RAM PC.

I HAVE BEEN PRODUCING ALBUMS WITH IT USING UP TO 103 TRACKS (!) MID AND AUDIO SIMULTANEOUSLY. IT RAN 15 HOURS A DAY FOR 7 MONTHS. IT CRASHED 4 TIMES DURING THAT WHOLE PERIOD !!! THIS IS FAR MORE STABLE THAN MY G4 PROTOOLS THAT CRASHES ON A DAYLY BASIS AND COST TEN TIMES AS MUCH. IM GOING BACK TO CUBASE TODAY.

Previously was using Acid pro...then purchased Cubase VST Producer Pak.....What a piece of SHIT!!! My PC is 700mhz 256RAM 30HD IT STILL CRASHED/FROZED/etc. Their TECH support is useless when you GET A CHANCE To REACH THEM!!!IF AT ALL...which others are having problems also?? AFTER 2weeks I said goodbye...ACID was simpler, intuitive and DID NOT CRASH on me...already have 120 compositions on it...Could not even get one decent comp up with CUSHIT!!! don't recommend these german programs....going to check out Protools(which is what all my professional colleagues told me to get anyway!)
