I bought my first ATM-41 in 1982 and quickly bought two more for my band. In my opinion, they blew away the Shure SM58's in sound clarity and presencs. I have a voice with a lot of undertones and the treble of the ATM was great in adding highlights. Up until the early 90's I played 5-6 nights per week as a full time musician and the mics worked great - never a problem. I still have them and they stil work great.

I've owned a 41a since 1983 (mine's the dark grey finish; they actually offered it in a GAUDY gold plate early on!). I used that poor thing almost non-stop for weekend jobs all the way through to the mid-nineties. It's been dropped (the original ad campaign showed the mike withstanding a drop, if I remember correctly). It's did more than it's share of time in smoky bars, and still sounds as good as my Stedman N-90 dynamic. This microphone was pretty much AT's way of wedging in on the SM58 market. I don't recall seeing many others in Charleston, WV, but, everyone always commented on the great sound quality. Mine is 18 yrs old, and going strong.
