The MX 40 Punch Gate is a 4channel noise gate with Drawmer's Peak Punch facility which is a dynamic enhancement that can be applied to the leading edge of drum and percussion sounds to give them more punch. Each channel has a switchable trigger frequency knob that lets you set the frequency that will open the gate. It's a bandpass filter with an octave bandwidth and a frequency range running from 50Hz to 8kHz. If you zoom in on a particular frequency, the gate will only react to frequencies in that band. The other two knobs set the threshold and release time with hold time being automatically dependent on the release time and attack time preset to fast. The range is switchable to one of two settings - the gate can either totally shut down a signal or let an attenuated signal through, and channels can be linked for stereo operation, 1 with 2 and 3 with 4, the left channel being the master for each pair. |
Four gates in one 1U rack box saves a lot of space and the limited controls make them very easy to set up. The peak punch facility does add a nice bit of extra definition to the start of a gated sound but it's not the sort of thing you'd want to use all the time. For situations where exact precision is needed you'd probably use a 201 but for general use the MX 40 does a great job.
There is external keying but only one key input so you can't have independent external control for each gate.
