A dual compressor that can be used as two separate mono units or in link mode for stereo, part of DBX's silver series. There are control knobs for threshold, ratio, attack and release with an 'auto' switch for program-dependent control of the envelope. There is also an independent peak limiter with threshold knob for each channel and a 'drive' knob for getting a bit more welly from the valves.

Good Points
The amount of compression variation the 566 provides is very comprehensive, with an especially fine degree of control for subtle compression at the lower ratios. This is a very versatile unit indeed, whether in use as two mono compressors or in stereo mode for compressing a whole mix, and the limiters are great for keeping the output exactly in check, preventing overload in the next piece in the chain. Having dedicated instrument inputs is a great idea, as the 566 can be used as a direct injection preamp/compressor to get the sound straight from an instrument to recorder in one go. The valves and their drive control help here to add a touch of warmth/dirt to the sound. Another nice touch is the low frequency de-emphasis which is switchable into the sidechain detector path and can help to stop heavy low frequency sounds from having disproportionate effect on the compression of the whole signal.
Bad Points
The mains power switch is on the back panel which makes it hard to access in a rack situation.
