1 RU VCA compressor, with a fixed attack/release time. This unit is a legend in its own right and has been used on countless releases in all genres of music. There are several varieties of the 160. The 160Vu was release in the 70's and is also popular but quite a lot more expensive. Then came the 160x and xt models, which have a snappier modern VCA kind of sound. Then came the modern 160a which is the variety still in production. However, it doesn't have the mojo of the older pieces. The sound of these is fast and grabby.

Good Points
Don't let the relatively cheap price on these things fool you, these units rub shoulders in practically every major studio with all the expensive classics. Although they have a fixed attack/release, they are great for everything from getting a kick or snare drum to have some snappy punch, to bass, to even vocals. They are the de facto 'boom pish' sound of classic house releases. They are especially useful for using the sidechain inputs to the kick to get pumping fx on a mix, as they are faster and grab harder than most everything out there. For the price everyone should have a couple.
Bad Points
None, other than the usual hazards of buying used gear.
