The DPR 522 is a DS201 killer, it's basically a highly specified dual gate with stereo linkage and a few unusual and extra features.The Key Filter is a parametric design with one knob for the centre frequency (60Hz to 13kHz range) and another for the bandwidth (0.1 to 8 octaves), it can be regarded as a pair of high and low pass filters with the space between them controlled by the width knob. Threshold, range, attack, hold and release knobs are standard stuff, as are the external key, key listen and duck switches. In addition to these there is an open check switch which forces the gate open so you can check the signal and the ADE switch which adds punch to a gated sound by restoring the leading edge transient.

Good Points
The best point is that it looks cool, all the translucent switches light up like psychedelic wine gums, but apart from that, it's a damn fine gate that does everything a DS201 can do and more. The 522 is easy to set up and does a precise gating job on whatever signal you throw at it. The key filter design may be quirky but it works and it sounds good when used purely as EQ in key listen mode. The ADE switch adds an extra sonic flexibility that can give a sound an edge if it needs it, try it on a kick drum for some extra attack.
