Two way active speaker, ported design. They are about 45 pounds each, and they are simply too large to be used in a cramped space. Manufacturer Dynaudio has recently launced their AIR line, which could see these speakers come down in price on the used market. Be very mindful of your available room space. A speaker this large in a small room will completely undermine your chances of creating a good mix. These speakers are ideal if you have one listening room that can accomodate them, that needs to double as a living space. These speakers are right at the center of being analytical and listenable. A serious buyer for these will have already read reviews in Mix online and Sound on Sound. Both reviews lavish these speakers with emphatic praise. Mix notes nothing can be had with their quality for less than their original $3,500 price , Sound on Sound says there among the best they've heard at any price. Both note that they are not necessarily "flat". I spent a lot of time searching for the "true" mercilessly flat speaker before choosing these. The search for a "flat" speaker is like any other search for truth... endless until you find what you like, and what works for you.

Good Points
What works for me about these speakers is the absolute depth and consistancy of the sound. True, they have their own character, but like a person with good character, they are absolutely dependable. Learn what these speakers sound like, and you always know how to mix on them. They sound the same at any level, from nearly any listening position. What character they have is designed to pick out detail. They are addicitive to listen to. You will never grow tired of working with them, and you will always have solid ratios of sound to work with. If you want to emulate a style of mix or production... if you can get your mix to sound the same through these speakers as the sort of style you're aiming for, you will find the same sort of relationship exists on other sound systems. The whole reason to seach for "flat" and "honest" speakers, is to find a tool that will help one mix. The sound of these has been designed to provide a tool that will let one create mixes that translate well from one system to another. They are the perfect mixing tool, and they are also a dream to just listen to... and listen to.... and listen to.... you will never get tired of them. They are a joy.
Bad Points
Again, these are a tool for mixing. It might help to augment them with a pair of krk v4's or mackie hr 624's to average out their presentation of "real" with that of the bm15a. If you can only get one pair though, the bm15a are by far the more useful. Their depth of bass and presentation provide far more essential information on what a mix will sound like from one type of sound system to another than the two dimensional obsessiveness of monitors with less amplification and less bass extension.
