Electric bass techniquesAlthough I can't take credit for "inventing" the techniques, here's a few things that worked well for some bass tracks I was recording.
Run the bass direct into the board, compress and EQ to taste and use as your first source. Next, use a 5 to 25ms delay as a "double" and pan it to the other side of the stereo field. EQ this one a little differently. If you turn the level down on this track, it will really help to define the location of the bass in the stereo field (towards the direct track, of course). You can then use a third track, with MILD overdrive or fuzz, then a fourth track with the bass through an amp.
Between these four tracks, you can use a parametric EQ to cut out the best sounding frequency ranges of each source, mix 'em together and route them to 1 or 2 tracks on your recorder. You can get some really nice variations.
