Gating Hell
Gating so tight it makes your eyes water.
Ever been asked to tightly gate drums or guitars off take and a lot of the time you're
hampered by the gate not opening fast enough or if the gate is set too fast,
you usually end up with a click as the gate opens. The solution is to take the signal from
the sync heads and feed it to the key input of the gates, this will trigger the gate to open
about 80ms (depending on the tape speed and machine) before the audio signal appears
at the gates input via the repro head. You then just have to adjust the attack time on the
gate to open a little late, and hey presto - no damm click!! This is easy to do no a Studer A 800
as they have seperate XLR sync outputs. On an Otari MTR 90 you have to modify the machine for this,
