Condenser Mic TechniquesWhen recording with a condensor microphone, back off on the mic and turn up the gain a bit. This allows a natural compression to be put on subjects with a wide dynamic range without the noise of adding cheap compression to things like bass or vocals. It also adds natural ambiance, much better than any reverb unit. If the sound is thin, don't boost the mids or cut the highs, tilt the diaphragm of the mic slightly off perpendicular to the incoming sound wave, it's like having another equalizer to play with. And, when recording bass guitar, turn the volume output down on the bass and turn the trim up on the mixer. This will apply a natural sounding compression as will running the signal throung some sort of tube device before recording, even if it is a guitar amp or pedal.
