Universal Audio is showing their new 2108 Dual Channel Mic & Instrument Preamp, which is based on the classic UA 1108 preamp. According to the UA rep I spoke with, the 2108 uses the input transformer from their 2-610 preamp and the output transformer from their 1176LN limiter. The unit is Class A solid state, there are no tubes. I heard the 2108 on guitar and it sounded quite nice, although critical listening was impossible in the NAMM show environment.
One unique feature of the 2108 is the "saturatable input stage". This is a FET input stage that employs a cascade circuit which allows for a harmonic-enriched soft saturation of the input signal. This gives the unit a wider variety of tones possible than is typical for a solid state unit.
The front panel sports per channel: gain dials, Hi-Z inputs on 1/4" connectors, +48v switch, Z-in switch, phase reverse switch, and a switch to select signal present indicator either input or output. There's also a level control dial. The rear panel sports XLR in/out for each channel.
The suggested retail price for the 2108 is $1,695.
