Of course we dropped by the Alesis stand to take a listen to the much anticipated new ION synth and see what it has been promising. Sadly and surprisingly, there was only one unit on display and this still appears to be in developement. The unit we saw was still distinctly prototype with only 40 sounds on board and was displaying one or two OS glitches. The colour scheme has changed somewhat from it's original green cheeked self, now sporting bright red end cheeks - blushing perhaps? Originally scheduled for a March release, the ION has now been pushed back to April - according to latest reports. One feels that this might go even futher as there is still clearly work to be done. We did manage to grab a few moments of sounds on board - there was no Demo mode in this prototype, so you'll have to make do with my limited keyboard skills. I expect we'll get a much clearer idea of what the ION can do once the full compliment of sounds and demo modes are finished. ION doesn't appear to have any on board effects - which does mean what you hear is the straight synthesis engine. Listen (MP3)
