Creative are one of the longest serving audio card manufacturers there are. There recent breakthroughs in the price/performance areas have meant that what used to cost nearer $1k can be bought for 10 time less. Not content with these innovations Creative are now working on a chip set that will smash those barriers once more. The X-Fi audio processor is a completely different beast, not only in terms of built-in processing power, but in architecture. X-Fi is built using Active Modal Architecture, essentially allowing it to be configured specifically for each application: games, leisure and creation. Depending on which mode you choose, the mind-boggling 10,300 MIPS is optimized for that purpose. X-Fi is also designed to be future-proof, being adaptable for many sound formats with 3D and 5.1 being a speciallity. X-Fi features are plenty but the processing power available will allow for many realtime 3-dimensional space emulations and positioning of multiple sound sources. X-Fi will also be able to manage multiple I/O systems making possible applications in recording and realtime mixing of live inputs. The X-Fi project boasts no fewer than 11 PHD level specialists and represents over 50 man years of work. Here are a few highlights from the detailed documentation we managed to get hold off – believe me it’s quite dense. All new, ultra high-quality SRC:
With such a high quality SRC, X-Fi can provide totally “transparent sample rate conversion. The quality is so good that they exceed the performance of most commercially available DACs. Advanced Filters:
Advanced filters to support highly complex reverb and spatialization models. In this way it can deliver the richest, most realistic audio environments ever and deliver them over any playback hardware from 7.1 speakers to headphones. X-Fi Mixer Engine
The mixer not only performs the work of a typical music studio’s mixer console, but it also performs all the mixing for the internal nodes of a synthesizer, reverb, equalizer, effects processors, dynamics processor and all the components of a complete music studio. In essence the X-Fi processor is a complete music studio on a chip! Yet again to achieve this it needs to be very powerful and so over 1,000 MIPS of equivalent processing power are dedicated to this task. According to Creative X-Fi delivers:
  • No compromise signal quality
  • Tremendous power at a great price
  • Acceleration for the most demanding audio-centric operations
  • Flexible routing to satisfy the needs of different applications
  • Very high performance with very low overhead for all audio applications Obviously, this being Creative, the recipients of this new technology will ultimately be PC users, but across the board X-Fi is likely to cause major implications to both the consumer and audio creatives alike. And of course, Creative own E-MU.... Watch this space.
