Home studio owners know the value of a large diaphragm condenser mic for recording vocals but it's probably only professional studios that can afford a classic mic like the AKG C12. Anyone wanting to buy a bit of that AKG quality, however, now have a new budget option with the launch of a new large diaphragm, cardioid condenser microphone, the Perception. Designed for both professional and semi-professional applications in project rooms, home studios, and for live instrument miking, it is available in two versions, the Perception 100 and Perception 200. Here's what AKG have to say about their two new mics...
The large one inch diaphragm provides a full 20 Hz – 20 kHz smooth frequency response, and high resolution, low distortion signal quality, that captures every vocal or instrumental nuance in the classic manner of a large studio condenser. The cardioid pattern ensures high sensitivity pick-up in front of the capsule, with sufficient off-axis attenuation, to provide good signal separation in the recording studio or live on stage. The all-metal body and professional build quality provides isolation from acoustic and RF interference. The rugged construction and sturdy capsule grill protects the microphone from damage and heavy handling on stage. The high signal headroom enables operation at SPLs of up to 135 dB without significant distortion. Additionally, the Perception 200 features a 10 dB pre-attenuation pad to provide higher SPL handling and prevent the overloading of mic input stages, as well as 12 dB per octave bass roll–off filter, at 300 Hz, for close proximity vocal miking, or to minimise LF rumble or boominess. The Perception 100 includes a stand adaptor, while the Perception 200 includes a full-size studio suspension cradle and a hard-shell road case. UK prices for the Perception 100 and the Perception 200 are £129.99 and £169.99 More info:
