Apple have made their first foray into home Hi-Fi systems with the introduction of their iPod Hi-Fi, an all-new high-fidelity speaker system that they tell us works seamlessly with the iPod to redefine the home stereo system. A single unit measuring just 17.0" x 6.6" x 6.9", the iPod Hi-Fi can be powered from a wall socket or by six D-cell batteries and comes with Apple Remote to control music playback from anywhere in the room. There is a universal dock that an iPod with a dock connector can be slid into but the input port also accepts an analog 3.5 mm stereo minijack or S/PDIF optical digital miniplug. Apple are making big claims for the sound quality on offer here – “… breathtaking acoustic performance and room-filling sound, “…crystal-clear, audiophile-quality sound and “…Close your eyes and you’d think you were listening to a huge stack of speakers. Well, We’ll keep an open mind on that one till we hear it in the flesh but it sure looks cute…
Here are the main ‘at a glance’ features from the Apple website:
  • World-class acoustic design
  • Large soundstage
  • Precise imaging and separation
  • Wide frequency range
  • Room-filling power without distortion
  • Seamless iPod integration
  • Apple Remote
  • AC and DC modes
  • Analog/digital input
  • Compact footprint
