Well, there’s been plenty of speculation about this especially as the UK branch of the Apple shop inadvertantly offered an 8-core option a few weeks back but now it’s official – Apple say that you should consider the bar officially raised as they unveil the latest addition to the Mac Pro family: The world’s first 3.0GHz, 8-core Intel Xeon-based Mac Pro.
The 8-core Mac Pro has two Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Clovertown processors running at 3.0GHz and is offered as an option alongside the quad-core Mac Pros featuring two Dual-Core Intel Xeon “Woodcrest processors at 2.0GHz, 2.66GHz, or 3.0GHz. At 3.0GHz, Apple say that the quad-core Mac Pro runs up to 2x faster than the Power Mac G5 Quad.1
The Mac Pro accommodates up to four drives and 3TB of storage, offers eight DIMM slots to fill with up to 16GB of RAM, and provides up to two SuperDrives. It also gives you four PCI Express slots and lots of I/O options for ultimate flexibility.
The option of having two 3.0GHz quad-core processors adds $1498 to the cost of Apple’s suggested $2,499 Mac Pro configuration of two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon “Woodcrest processors.
