Dave Robinson from PSNE tackles the chatty proprietors of Microtech Gefell – who are are the other German mic manufacturer who have roots back to the 1920’s. Incidentally, they are also celebrating 80 years in business. Even more of a coincidence is that Georg Neumann was also involved in the company at the start, before the companies were forcefully split - just after the war. Neumann getting the luck of the draw and ending up in West Germany and therefore able to export freely and build their brand. Microtech Gefell however were in the East and unable to do that as effectively.

However, they still made microphones during this time. At the AES Dave Robinson caught up with Jochem Kunast and Ulrich Apel for a chat about their history plus a look at their new mics.

Featured in the video was the new M300 cardioid Microphone which is designed to be used in “difficult acoustic circumstances” (actually used in the video as the interview mic) - it's got a lot of body.

The new noiseless UM 930 “A switchable studio condenser microphone which combines modern large diaphragm capsule technology with the latest in semiconductor circuit topology.

Also new is the UM 930 Twin which has a double capsule inside the mic allowing you to record both patterns – it effectively has two outputs so you can record them both and decide afterwards which you want to use.

Amazing mics. I have the UMT800 and a pair of M300s and they are beautiful. I can't believe they are so rarely discussed.
