This year sees several big anniversaries in the audio world...grand-daddies Neumann and Microtech-Geffell are celebrating 80 years in the business, and comparatively young upstarts AES and APRS are almost collecting their bus passes at a mere 60 years old.
The Association of Professional Recording Services, no stranger to running shows itself, not only had a stand on the floor, but also through partnership with UK Trade & Investment, was assisting other UK companies with their presence too... with cash, coffee and cold beer - a pretty potent mix ;-]
One of the great things about the AES Conventions is that there's a lot more to them than just the exhibition - invariably there are seminars, papers, workshops, meetings, tutorials and a whole host of special events on the schedule too, and the 124th was no exception. One of the highlights was organised by the APRS - hosted by Peter Filleul, legendary Beatles recording engineer Geoff Emerick talked to a packed audience about the 40th anniversary project with the BBC to film the recreation of seminal album Sgt. Pepper using original techniques and equipment to record today's artists doing versions of the Beatles' songs.
The event was illustrated with footage from the 2-hour documentary, and Geoff talked about both the making of the programme, and the original 1967 album, and answered questions from the floor.
Great stuff, and definitely one of those 'I was there' events to be talked about in years to come.
We managed to grab a few snippets of Geoff's presentation on camera, and got some time with Malcolm Atkin, the newly-appointed APRS chair, as well as Peter Filleul and Gil Limor. Andy McCreeth
