Hard to believe I know, unless of course you were still the proverbial twinkle in your parents eye, but it’s 26 years - give or take a day, since Thomas Dolby’s Windpower was released. Celebrated on the Dolby blog, he says:
"It reached #31 in the UK charts, and not long afterwards I performed it on Top Of The Pops. I think the teen audience (and Sylvian-esque DJ Kid Jensen) must have been very confused! Most of them must be in their 40’s by now. After all, it took quite a few years for renewable energy to catch on, didn’t it?" Only number 31 in the charts?!? How can this be? One must assume that there was some quality competition – well if you rate "DADADA" by Trio, "Shy Boy" by Bananarama, and Brat’s timeless classic "Chalk Dust - The Umpire Strikes Back" (no, I’ve never heard of it either), then I guess poor Thom had no chance. Actually, there were a surprising number of quality contenders - Yazoo "Don’t Go", Sakamoto and Sylvian’s "Bamboo Houses" (one of my all time electronica faves) and Donna Summer’s "Love Is In Control" were all out around that time too. So, enjoy the video of Thomas performing on the UK's favourite chart show Top of The Pops (now discontinued).
