Vinyl is making a huge comeback, at least in the U.S.
Consumer electronic retailer Best Buy is making plans to put vinyl LPs in all of its 1,020 stores. According to a New York Post article, while vinyl represents less than 5 percent of Best Buy's music sales, the format is growing while CD sales continue to shrink:
Vinyl sales grew 15 percent year-over-year in 2007 and 89 percent in 2008, making the 1.9 million vinyl albums purchased last year the most since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. By contrast, CD sales have fallen at a roughly 20 percent clip for the past few years.
The sales trends for vinyl vs CDs isn't the only thing that's reversed from the past.
While music fans paid a premium for CDs when they were introduced, now vinyl carries the premium price. While LPs are bulkier for retailers than CDs, they sell at approximately $23, compared to $14 for a CD.
