Vinyl Making A Major Comeback

Best Buy Bringing LPs Back To 1,000 Locations 28-Aug-09
Vinyl Making A Major Comeback

Vinyl is making a huge comeback, at least in the U.S.

Consumer electronic retailer Best Buy is making plans to put vinyl LPs in all of its 1,020 stores. According to a New York Post article, while vinyl represents less than 5 percent of Best Buy's music sales, the format is growing while CD sales continue to shrink:

Vinyl sales grew 15 percent year-over-year in 2007 and 89 percent in 2008, making the 1.9 million vinyl albums purchased last year the most since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. By contrast, CD sales have fallen at a roughly 20 percent clip for the past few years.

The sales trends for vinyl vs CDs isn't the only thing that's reversed from the past.

While music fans paid a premium for CDs when they were introduced, now vinyl carries the premium price. While LPs are bulkier for retailers than CDs, they sell at approximately $23, compared to $14 for a CD.

So now they're gonna put Lady Gaga on vinyl and try to sell it in a big box outlet? These people have NO clue do they? Truly.

Well seeing as I stopped purchasing CD's about two years ago and only buy iTunes or vinyl I'd say there on the wright track , However, with that said I'm not sure how long the trent will last .

And as much as I too hate the "big box" stores I have to give Best Buy some credit for carrying more that just the pop market ... I have always been able to find my metropolis ,Cleopatra ,and Invisible releases there as well . If not for them I would have had to pay a hefty special order price for most of my old Foetus, PIG, and KMFDM CD's .

Wow... how long until TDK starts making D-90 tapes to copy the vinyl onto again?

Guvnor

Then you could sample the cassettes and get that "authentic" sound.

Well, we can attest to the fact that vinyl has returned in full force - in our little corner of the world at least. Every month for the past two years we have gotten together to celebrate the LP and all warm music that it holds.
