Experimental Laser Microphone Looks Like A High-Tech Bong

And It Sounds Muffled - But Is Still Intriguing 07-Oct-09

Here's inventor David Schwartz's latest test of his new laser-based microphone design.

Schwartz explains:

We reworked Proto 1 to make this unit. It's half the size of P1, uses a $30 trace line laser, a larger aperture nozzle, and a single fan. Sounds better, but still a long way from being a commercial product.

Schwartz has a patent on his laser mic design - but the current implementation is bulky and sounds muffled.

Whether or not Schwartz is able to translate his patent into a useful microphone, though, it's interesting to be able to look over his shoulder as he develops and iterates his design.

mystic radio, this is the birth of a new and promising technology. it may look like smoke and mirrors to you, but if this patent gets picked up by, let's say, neumann or others; it will develop to something huge.

keep the faith brother!

At least interesting in theory. Reminds me of plasma/ion transducers. The physics mean the results could be mind boggling, but getting it to work and sound good, well that's a long long expensive road. At a certain point you make microphones so good that speakers can handle the level of fidelity presented, and you need things like plasma drivers to resolve all the detail. And even then, how noticeable will it really be? Even top end condensers are picking up things speakers can resolve.

And the thing is a frickin' bong. Let's not split hairs, it's a bong, with a built in laser light show.

On that note, here here for science!

In that case, there's definitely a market for this thing, whether he gets the mic working or not!
