Women's Audio Mission, a San-Francisco-based non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of women in the recording arts, inaugurates its newly-renovated facility with a Spring Workshop Series. "Now that we've completed extensive acoustic upgrades, we can't wait to resume our workshops in this new-and-improved setting, " said WAM Executive Director Terri Winston. "So we're kicking off 2010 with a great series of courses that are ideal for audio engineers at every level, from novice to pro."
The series starts on March 11 with "Introduction to Sound for Film," which describes the elements of sound for film and video, using examples from major motion pictures to illustrate techniques, technology and workflow. The class is taught by Pixar Animation Studios Media Systems Manager/Independent filmmaker M.T. Silvia, who brings more than 20 years of audio experience to her lecture. In "Soldering Basic Audio Connections," taught by Terri Winston, students will build their own microphone cable and learn about different types of cables, connections and jacks and how they are wired. "Contact Microphones and Sound Art," led by award-winning filmmaker and media artist Kadet Kuhne, describes piezoelectric microphones and the interesting ways they can be used in the realm of sound art and sound design. Students will leave with a microphone that they constructed themselves.
Classes are open to the public; WAM members receive substantial discounts.
About Women's Audio Mission
Women's Audio Mission is a San Francisco-based non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of women in music production and the recording arts. In a field where women are chronically under-represented (less than 5%), WAM seeks to "change the face of sound" by providing hands-on training, experience, career counseling and job placement to women and girls in media technology for music, radio, film, television and the internet. WAM believes that women's mastery of music technology and inclusion in the production process will expand the vision and voice of media and popular culture.
