Is There Still Hope For MySpace?

Company Reveals Updated Look 16-Jul-10
Is There Still Hope For MySpace?

MySpace was once one of the most important, if not the most important, websites for musicians. Musicians would create MySpace pages for their bands before creating their own Web pages.

MySpace development has seemed to stagnate over the last few years, though. And FaceBook has moved past MySpace to become the largest social network and the 2nd most popular site on the Internet, behind Google.

Now, it looks like MySpace may be making some changes to try and recapture its former glory.

They've announced a new design for profile pages, shown above, that gives the pages a more professional look and makes them easier to read.

About the new profiles, MySpace says “We’re testing a new look and feel of our site among users and the response so far has been positive.”

What do you think? Will updating MySpace's look help the site recapture its importance for musicians?

Love the new look - but it's kind of hard to see it as professional when there's an ad at least 0.33 of the total screen width there. I can fully understand the necessity of ads but if they're this prominent they have a rather negative effect.

Well, with their "quality" of mp3s on the band profile page there is no hope. It's some kind of 96, maybe 128 kbps, and stereo separation is almost none. It sounds like from a cell phone or something. I hope they will make it possible to play 320kbps or VBR mp3s on band profile pages.

x32167 nailed it. The sound quality is really terrible. You can import a good-sounding mp3 to MySpace and it'll sound totally different when played back in the MS music player. The problem is with the lack of highs, poor stereo separation and audible distortion in some freq bands. The real problem is, of course, not the sound quality but the attitude of the people behind MySpace. The just don't care. They must hate music. Otherwise I can't get why they still go on with the same crappy encoder.

Since Rupert Murdoc bought MySpace I will never go back there. Never I tell you!

I just cannot support the evil that he does in any way.

As SNS function is... doesn't work well. As MP3 function is... doesn't work well. As Band Homepage is... too many annoying ads.

What is the point to use myspace now?

(Un)fortunately these social networking sites have become a necessary evil for musicians . Yea the sound quality sucks and the ads are personally one of the main reasons I dislike the sites . It hardly feels like "myspace" when I'm forced to have banners front and center that are hyping something other than my music . And as to Atomic Shadow's comment , Rupert Murdoc IS a scumbag ...but it doesn't cost 15 bucks a month(or more) for a personally hosted site with our name on it . If they would allow custom placement of ads and allowed players like mix/soundcloud to be embedded it would be a huge step in the right direction.
