A vocoder is a synthesis system, mostly used for speech but is often also applied to synth loops, musical parts or beats. The input is passed through a multiband filter, each band is passed through an envelope follower, and the control signals from the envelope followers are communicated to the decoder which applies these control signals to corresponding filters in the synthesizer to create some amazing tones which are based on harmonics.
