Sonic LAB: Extra - Zoom H1 Sound Comparison

A variety of applications compared 04-Apr-11

Feedback has been good for Andy's excellent review of the Zoom H1. As promised in the full review, we've posted some additional comparison footage between it and the Zoom H4N too.

Full Review Here

Pros

Very affordable price

Extremely lightweight

Audio quality surprisingly good

Very straightforward - no complex menus and external controls for everything

Decent battery life

Can power via USB

  Confidence monitor speaker

Cons

Looks & feels a bit plasticky and cheap

No case

Plastic tripod socket doesn't feel like it's gonna last long

small buttons for adjusting record levels, transport, etc. are very small & fiddly, and almost impossible to see in a dark environment

Available now at  around £79/$99

I own the h4n and love it. I was trying to decide between it and the h1 but went for the h4n due to added input and percieved quality. I must say given this comparisson the h4n has a brighter high end but the stereo field seems a bit wider. The h1 seems to have a nicer low end. Would u guys agree? I'm impressed. Might pick up an h1 as well now lol.

Hi Flux - yes, I totally agree; the H4n does indeed have a brighter top end, but the low end on the h1 seems more pronounced. The H4n seemes to suffer slightly less from positional variation too, but all in all I was very impressed with the H1. It's so easy to use and pocketable, it makes an ideal recorder to just pop in a bag or pocket and have with you at all times. Might need a case, though.

Damn, those 451's sound amazing on the electric guitar.

The H1 is a clear winner to me. More natural sound, stronger bottom end and for only $99.00. How can you go wrong. Cons are the buttons are small and hard to push at times. Everything is plastic today, so what.

May pick an H1 up and paint the buttons different colours with enamel modeling paint to differenciate them in low light situations.

Thanks for the review. H4N clearly has a better top end even with my f'ed up 45 year old ears....

Did you have them at auto or manual? Same settings?

Matchopeur45 05-May-12 09:22 PM

Hey. Can you remember if the Low-Cut and the Auto level were on or off ? Thanks

elgeneralputo 02-May-12 11:34 PM

Awesome video!!! I have a question: In regards to the electric guitar sound.. Which recording device came closer to recording the actual sound that came out of the amp?

p0w3rKiLL 13-Apr-12 03:55 AM

More Cowbell ! :D

mygoodstuffreviewed 10-Apr-12 01:59 PM

Yes, the XLR in is quite a big plus. If I could afford the H4n, or the Tascam DR100 I'd probably go for one of them, but for now the H1 is pretty good. There will always be something better in the future!

m0rjc 10-Apr-12 11:47 AM

Does sound tempting, though I do fancy the 4 track capabilities and XLR ins on the H4n, for use with my existing mics.

Thanks - Richard

InAWorldMedia 10-Apr-12 04:40 AM

Wow.... The H1 is actually surprisingly impressive...

mygoodstuffreviewed 09-Apr-12 10:02 AM

The H1 does have line in. They also recently updated the firmware for it so you can now use it as an audio interface into PC and Mac.

APSISMETAL 03-Apr-12 07:16 PM

Could you recommend the Zoom H1 for making Audio Recordings at very Loud Rock and Metal Concerts ?

LxvMedia 27-Mar-12 06:45 PM

How well does this mic do outside? say there happened to be a basketball game outside.Would be be able to hear the players running and their shoes squeeking on the floor?

m0rjc 25-Mar-12 09:47 PM

Different but both good. The comment below about boosting treble would sound right I think. So it's XLR inputs and 4 track or not really, and large difference in cost. I assume the H1 has line in so can be connected to a mixing desk - which would cover my usages of sound effects recording and recording of the final show. I currently use old mini-disk equipment.

arnebarnard 16-Mar-12 06:46 AM

Good! You saved yourself some money-both ways!

Honestly, you'd have to be Superman to tell the difference between H1 and H4.And if the differences in audio quality are that miniscule, why pay more for *just* the sonic quality?

paulinhofernando 12-Mar-12 04:02 PM

Please that cancorder or digital camera with camcorder function was used in this test? The picture is excellent. Intereresse have to know the make and model of equipment. Thanks if you can answer. PAULINHOFERNANDO / Brazil.

vwlover94 10-Mar-12 11:13 AM

THE ZOOM H1 CAN BE ADJUSTED TO MATCH THE ZOOM H4N using audacity and boosting the treble on the zoom h1 file recording

kjjmusic 09-Mar-12 10:57 AM

I've got the H1 myself and im very pleased with it. I think its the cheapest way to get a decent recording of an acoustic instrument. Maybe the H4 is a little more "open" in the sound, but it's hard to hear the difference.

paulinhofernando 28-Feb-12 12:11 AM

Please cancorder that was used in this test? The picture is excellent. Thanks if you can answer. PAULINHOFERNANDO/ BRAZIL

aronchas 04-Feb-12 11:52 PM

fantastic video, I was looking for this!

hugomedel 12-Jan-12 03:58 PM

quite nice song of the band, whats the name??

molzesz 06-Jan-12 08:14 PM

It is quite strange that some one try to compare this two recorders. this is complete different levels of equipment. but i must say h4 had better stereo.

PanPropinator 25-Dec-11 05:17 AM

now I can see the differences betwen both zoom... H4N is realy better then H1 :(

luizluiz1992 09-Dec-11 09:31 PM

look at my channel a test of zoom h1. That's have a low quality audio with loud volume speaker. Or is defective?

TheMasterLuk 28-Nov-11 06:28 PM

hi again ;] Can anyone tell me, how does H1 work when it's used with high gain settings, like recording guitar and vocals from distance of 2-3 meters? Is there a lot of hum?

TheMasterLuk 28-Nov-11 02:16 PM

It's realy owkward, your Faith Guitar sounded almost identical on any of this devices. I'll probably go into H1

davidonkey 11-Nov-11 06:02 AM

NICE VID! REMEMBER THAT THE H4 HAVE 2 XRL INPUT STEREO CHANNELS

MrdjHYPEr 11-Nov-11 02:51 AM

I am pleased as punch with my H1!

drumgroovy 05-Nov-11 10:23 AM

Well, I don't think the main purpose of this video was to showcase the quality... it's more of a comparison, in which case, the most important factor (IMO) would be equal distance instead of optimal recording distance.

drumgroovy 05-Nov-11 10:21 AM

Maybe it's the setting, I don't know, but the H1 sounds a teensy bit dull compared to the dynamic H4N. But for 1/4 the price, the H1 is AMAZING. Plus, nothing a little EQ tweak won't fix to match the H4N.

MatthewOlver 28-Oct-11 07:51 AM

what song is that or how do u play it

mikelb77 14-Oct-11 08:13 AM

Not to troll at all, but couldn't placement of mics/recorders have more of an effect than the recorder itself? All units are placed as close as possible, but in my experience (especially with mic'ing electric guitar amps), two or three inches can literally make all the difference.

Just thinking out loud here though. Thanks for posting the video! Well shot and very thoroughly planned. Definitely an interesting concept either way!

freemancarl 12-Oct-11 05:52 PM

ZH1 FTW! :)

brathahn24 05-Oct-11 10:33 PM

h1 is the best oO

DrBromiAndufEwd 27-Sep-11 08:24 PM

Thanks so much for this demonstration! I was up in the air if i should drop the extra coin for the H4, but for what i need the H1 is going to more than sufficient for the difference in cost.

pieraro01 22-Sep-11 05:57 PM

Fantastic test! I have a Zoom H4n and a Zoom H1. Zoom H4n, in comparison, has more bass response. But if I don't record with both, Zoom H1 in manual control level has a good performance. I think You have recorded with Zoom H4n in XY 90*, not XY120*, it's right?

zgrafsoftware 19-Sep-11 02:00 AM

OK, I have to admit my bias -- I want the H1 to win. Maybe I'm doing an injustice to the H4. I don't know. But I do know this. The H1 retails fr $100 and the H4 for $250. In order to buy the H4, I would need it to sound 150% better than the H1. Clearly, as shown in this video, it doesn't.

zgrafsoftware 19-Sep-11 01:44 AM

Slightly better stereo image on the H1 than with the H4, at least to my ears.

BenjaminNBS 10-Sep-11 12:17 PM

Great review with some extremely useful examples! THANKS! :-)

MrIsaacE 09-Sep-11 11:26 PM

h4 appears to have a better dynamic range but thats just EQ, the H1 just misses a bit of presence at the very top and bottom. the H4 has a completely different and more enhanced spacial rendition. H4 seemed to handle the resonance of the chord at the end better too although it may be that it was played more softly. very subtle differences!

RomanticPopPunk 07-Sep-11 05:39 AM

@transparent101How was it? Does it reduce noise when you record?

zgrafsoftware 03-Sep-11 03:14 PM

I think the H1 sounds better than the H4. H1 seems to have better bass response also. But I think the Zoom H1 level is slightly higher than the H4. So it's not a totally fair apples-to-apples. Need to match levels to with 0.1 dB before you can do an accurate comparison.

triggerdance 03-Sep-11 02:34 PM

to be honest i as im experianced in lots of differant mics the h1 had a warmer sound than the h4 but the h4 had better stereo image and the treble was more controled but so marginally that no one would care

noxlupi1 24-Aug-11 11:56 AM

actually i in my eyes, the H1 is the better product.. its cheap, you put it in your pocket, reach your destination, and press record and you have your self a nice high quality recording! The expensive H4n, Fiddling with DSP processors, compressor settings and 4 channel audio, external mic etc etc.. just pulls the whole concept apart! its a pocket recorder for god sake.. not a portable studio.. use it for sketching songs and stuff nothing else. :)

noxlupi1 24-Aug-11 11:48 AM

To me H4n has a flatter spectrum and a wider stereo image then the H1. Nothing you cant compensate 90 percent for in post. so if you dont need internal compression and 4 channel rec. external xlr mic. It is not worth the extra money.

MrPianoparker 23-Jul-11 07:52 PM

u got auto level on. i am making a album for my band what would u recommend settings wise to record.

azulyrojo89 16-May-11 10:22 AM

use low cut? or auto level ?? in the acoustic guitar????

transparent101 26-Apr-11 12:53 PM

I got the H1 because I couldnt afford the H4..

lovemyguitarlomo 18-Apr-11 08:16 AM

I gonna get one!!!

powlaaku 12-Apr-11 03:43 PM

H1 has a fat tone coming out from its raw recording... :D Nice~~~

KelseyBDJ 09-Apr-11 10:38 PM

Awesome test, but for a wide price difference H1 is just as good in my opinion. I'd be happy with the H1 for the price. The AKG mics sounded best on the Metal guitar in my opinion, but overall the H4n takes its.

It seems like the H1 gave a warmer sound, but the H4Nn gave the widest range in my opinion.

Great test, keep up the good work. =]

fuzzjohn 07-Apr-11 03:17 PM

I thought exactly the same. Glad I got the h4n instead of the h1. The H1 is still pretty damn good though.
