The Humbucker Known As The Thunderbolt

Lollar releases El Rayo 03-Nov-11

Lollar Pickups has released El Rayo (The Thunderbolt), which they say is a humbucker, but probably not what you'd expect. El Rayo is described as tight and punchy, with a high end that opens up when pushed, and lows that stay defined and fat.

Jason Lollar had this to say, "Very clear and articulate, they are extremely responsive to your volume control and picking dynamics. Wanna mix the "Rayo" with single coils? We would. Also, don't be fooled by the DC numbers...El Rayo has a strong output without the heavy midrange bump, while still retaining the Lollar "3D" quality. Don't like humbuckers? Think again."

Pricing and Availability:
$165.00

I was mistaken jimmy has them in a jazzmaster, the school days clip is regular imperials. as far as output and clarity the video explains that. they would work in a lapsteel.

Great thanks! Also, how do you think these would work in a lap steel? Is there enough output and clarity?

we havent had time to make one but Luther Dickenson has a set I think in his red 335 and jimmy herring has a set in his strat running buckers but you would have to find something recent like in the last 6 to 8 months. I believe there is a fairly good quality clip on youtube of jimmy sitting in with return to forever and i know i saw one of luther but I couldnt find either right now.. i think the jimmy clip is them doing school days- they are laughing cause jimmy nails the head

This was educational and interesting. Do you happen to have a (or know of) a quality sound demo of these pups? I can only find one fellow who has put them in a Les Paul but the sound was not great.

Also, how do you think these would work in a lap steel? Is there enough output and clarity?

yes that should work just fine

I assume this will play nicely with your Single-coil for Humbucker Pickup. I was wanting the El Rayo for the bridge and the other for the neck.

If there was a Jazz Bass pup that did this 6:43 - 6:53 i would be all over it! Can it be done?

no sense going over peoples heads! thanks. If you have original PAFs I wouldnt touch the guitar or even a little later T tops with the patent sticker sound good. If you have the 490 series or burstbuckers or 57 classics the el rayo is going to have come through a mix easier and have more dynamic range.

Nice analogies for people like me. You could have easily gone over my head, but you didn't, that's cool.

The only pickups I have listened closely to are the standard pickups in my Les Paul. i like to rock with my bridge pickup, but I also like a boosted clean sound with a little bit of bite for playing some blues with my neck pickup. Do you think I would be pleasantly surprised with a different set of pickups?

Realfi 31-Oct-11 06:33 AM

A8! I had no idea there were so many Alnico formulations!

LollarGuitars 27-Oct-11 05:55 PM

Thanks! As soon as the pickup gets listed on my site we should have soundfiles at the same time.

Lollar rocks, I have an excellent set of Blackfaces. Give us a sound clip of these new humbuggies! And yes, Seattle looks like it's going to rain any minute now., :)
