Turn Your iPad Into A Vintage Synth

Physynth combines AAA cutting edge rendering technologies with Physics to generate sound 14-Dec-11

Simian2 tells us that their new Physynth turns your iPad or iPad 2 into a piece of real vintage synth hardware. One of the developers describes it as "that feeling you get when you find an old bit of kit in your dad's garage as a kid, its from the 70's and its awesome!"

Here's all the details in the company's own words:

Physynth by Simian2 (an amalgam of 'physics' and 'synthesizer') heralds a landmark moment in music creativity, combining cutting-edge user-created physics with an AAA quality game graphics engine for unparalleled immersion, Physynth brings traditional music applications out of the stone age and sets the bar very high for all other creativity apps to be judged.

Created as a live experimental instrument and musician's sketchpad, Physynth enables the musician to toy with new concepts, melodies, rhythms and unexpected aural pleasures using the power of physics and experimental design in an organic, fluid manner.

Physynth features a beautiful hand-crafted real 3D music hardware with custom shaders tailored especially for iPad and iPad2, Physynth really is vintage hardware in the palm of your hand. A labour of love and effort, Simian2 have brought something that can only be experienced first-hand, into your hands.

The video reminds me of the stuff that contestants in "The Apprenctice" dish out. Half expect Alan Sugar to turn up.. "You're fired you schlagg!"

The advert doesn't help sell the software and based on the response so far seems to be acting less as a teaser and more as a turn-off. The video the company posted showing a beta tester running through a few presets is more intriguing. It may do well if priced appropriately and if it sounds as good as it looks:

On what planet would the modeling agency couple sit down on their designer sofa and have a laugh while they programmed analogue synths on their iPads. One some weird level, this advert is genius because it's tripping my head out altogether.

That song is pretty much the last thing I can imagine that anyone into synths would want to hear.

This synth allegedly features "beautiful hand-crafted real 3D music hardware." Has "real" come to mean "virtual" or are they also selling hardware? Is war peace? Is freedom slavery?

Hi,

I'm the developer of Physynth. It's pretty heartbreaking to read your comments. We asked Film Creatives nicely to make a short ad for us so we could promote Physynth to the mass market as well as the synthesiser crowd.

I would like to ask you nicely not to judge the app and rip it to pieces until you've seen a proper review of it or actually tried it out. There is such a thing as don't judge a book by it's cover.

It's not only marketed at you guys. The reality is there's only two of us here, and we've struggled for 7 months living off beans to get it made. If it doesn't do well, there won't be many more synths that think differently. Palmsounds and other places will soon have a review up and we've sent a promo code to sonicstate. We're not trying to hide anything here.

You can access my twitter and flame me directly @squaredape or the artist/musician @chimpsquared

Thanks for your time guys, I realise there is going to be criticism, but lets not rip the little guy to pieces now eh?

-Rob

Hi Rob,

I Rep'ed KORG for five years and while they are a great company, I never saw any promos as well produced as this. I think it serves it's purpose to spark interest. I know I'm interested in your product. Well done, and good luck!

I must admit the spot left me scratching my head and wondering what exactly it was for! I think for my purposes, I'll have to look at the above You Tube video to find out some of what I want to know. I would suggest you may wish to make more links to things like that for musicians.

That said, I wish you the best of luck, Rob! I hope you do well (no more eating beans - I know what that's like).

I can't see why there are all the complaints. Has anyone actually used the app other than me? The teaser vid unfortunately has been used to unfairly gauge how good the synth is.

Apart from the on-screen keyboard being too small, no Core MIDI support from what I can see, a little bit of latency and a very small quantity of sounds (all of which Rob & his team can no doubt turn around pretty quickly) , the thing is awesome.

At $3 its an absolute steal. It has a real interesting take on sound manipulation, and an absolutely gorgeous look and feel.

I also love the way how when you tilt your iPad, the whole screen perspective changes.

Well done.

There's a lot of guys called Eric who rep'd for Korg on this comments page :)

Rob, if indeed you are the developer, the critisisms were about the ad, not the app. Congrats on building something I would not be able to.

In all seriousness, I have yet to see an App promo as effective as just a close up of an iPad with some hands actually showing off the features in action. That'll cover about every demographic you need and save you from spending unnecessarily...IMHO.

My complaint was definitely about the advertising, referring to a computer program as "real" and "hardware," not the program itself. Best of luck to its developers, and here's to more truth and less over-the-top hyperbole in advertising.

Blue Monster 65    Said...

I didn't think I was complaining at all! I just had no idea what the spot was for; I thought perhaps the wrong video had been uploaded!

That said, my wishes for Rob and his synth stand. Further investigation confirms it's rather interesting and I'll have to play around with it.

Rob, I for one have downloaded Physynth and I'm looking forward to checking it out. I can assure you that my comments were only specifically directed at the awful, very unfortunate music in that teaser video. Would have been much better to hear what the synth itself sounds like. Other than that, looks like a pretty intriguing app for $2.99.

So people playing with an Ipad. So let us hear what they are doing, or give us a Voice Over to explain something. The ad was just a lot of feel good nothing. It looks like people are mindlessly sitting around wasting their time. Please stop insulting people by creating this type of useless trash.

Koshdukai    Said...

Bought it, made some suggestions (embedded manual zoom, CoreMIDI) to Robert via Twitter (very quick feedback and reply on his part, which was great), read all the manual (because you really need to read it so you know you're not leaving any existing feature out) and... well, it's a nice looking musical app, although I wished some of its eye-candy could be turned off. Dealing with real screen-glare worsened by the virtual glare/bloom it's kind'of a pain in certain situations.

It's definitely not a synth, since there's no real-time filter nor ADSR envelope control.

It's a ROMpler with a cute 4x physics based performance play engine, which isn't really my thing but I'm sure others may like it. The rules to build the performance scenarios are quite sophisticated, with ghost notes, create/kill note "walls" etc, but... in the end, it's really just a ROMpler with 4 "funny" and difficult to control/program poly sequencers.

It reminds me a lot of an existing free app called Soundrop which... actually, is really (more?) fun and simpler to use :)

My fault and my bad for thinking Physynth used physics as one of the performance controller of an evolved synth engine (Animoog comes to mind), which is not. ...maybe it was the name that fooled me... Phy(sics)SYNTH! :/

If it was more expensive, then I would be a little bit disappointed with my decision of buying it, but since it isn't, I'm ok with it and I'm curious if I'll use it more when CoreMIDI support is added :)

Nicely produced video, which does not show me what the app does or sounds. (which. Wy I'm now on YouTube, looking for reviews, to see if I want to buy it)

keep your good ideas to yourself, and thats a really fuckin good one

I know a guy that would pay for your ad ideas, I'll have him message you

please post a link. I haven't been able to find any other videos except of that review by discchord.

the song is by one republic, it's called secrets.

synthision 16-Dec-11 09:11 AM

Why did you have to rip off Adele?

alimin 16-Dec-11 03:09 AM

I'm a bit confused by this video. From the 38 seconds of this ad, it only showed 9 seconds of the actual app. This looks more like an ad for the iPad. However, I can say that the GUI looks spot on :)

Mr3rdgeist 15-Dec-11 11:33 PM

I like the soundtrack :) does anyone know which track this is?

FSK1138 15-Dec-11 06:09 PM

the ad is pointless -if you had a kid finding a dusty ipad in his dads garage - he turns it on and sees the manuel - then he plays the synth -- it would have been way better

SimianSquared 15-Dec-11 11:00 AM

if you're looking for a demo of the sounds, check out our other videos.

hippocoder 12-Dec-11 06:00 PM

Sounds as stunning as it looks. If you have a blog, they might give you a promo code so you can see. This is creative entertainment IMHO.

richardbates1 10-Dec-11 04:26 AM

Yes, very weird. What does it actually sound like?

DeathBoy2098 07-Dec-11 01:05 AM

The ad doesn't actually show me anything about the synth (like, for instance, what it can sound like). Just two actors pretending to laugh with each other. Weird. I'd love to hear a demo far more than see something like this.
