Sonic Touch - iPad Music Show Ep 6

Grain Science, TC11 - 2011 Top Five Apps 13-Jan-12
SonicTouch iPad and Music 6 28:37 mins
Streaming:
   QuickTime (MP4)  | iOS MP4

Hosts

Gaz Williams - Songsurgeon.co.uk
Nick Batt - editor sonicstate.com

Welcome to another episode of sonic TOUCH - the show dedicated to music creation on the touchscreen device. We are primarilly focussed for now on iOS devices - this may well change as other platforms become viable.

Circumstances dictated that this was shot remotely at the last minute so apologies for any loss in quality. We discuss what we might see at NAMM next week, our Top Five Apps from 2011, then Gaz takes a look at Grain Science synth and the esoteric TC11.

As ever, we look forward to your comments and suggestions.

Featured Apps:
SynthX £6.99
Thumbjam £4.99
Loopy £4.99
iKaossilator £13.99
Garageband £2.99

Animoog £6.99
NanoStudio £10.49
TouchOSC £2.99

The review of Grain Science was much appreciated. I was on the fence and certain that I didn't need another gimmicky iOS synth. Thanks guys!

Nick and Gaz: if you haven't already, check out Redmatica's GBSampleManager, a Mac program for managing, creating and editing instruments for the Simple Sampler in GarageBand Touch. The real draw to GBSM is the ability to transfer complete EXS24 instruments from Logic to your GarageBand Touch projects - GBSM turns GB's simple sampler into a multi-sampler sans filter. The software costs only $4.99 US and is available in The Mac App Store.

Also check out the MidiBridge app that allows you to use your "old" Akai SynthStation 25 and Line6 Midi Mobilizer v1 with CoreMidi apps...

Great show. Regarding experimental interfaces nothing beats "the Movement I-V" app in my opinion. A kind of tape-loop controller.

I stumbled across this show looking for reviews on Grain Science. Great show; I'll be checking out your other episodes.

grain science is the best app right now and the sounds are amazing, paste and copy and tons of things to do .

this week's Sonic Touch didn't happen?

mCKENIC 02-Feb-12 11:13 PM

Hi Nick & Gaz! Sorry if this is not the place - but Im wondering please...

Im going to be getting more in to sound installations/gallery work, stuff that would really benefit from a visual element. Any chance you might look at/point out some visualization apps - video out hardware in the future please?

Love the shows - keep 'em coming!

Love the show guys. Keep 'em coming!!

Thank you Nick & Gaz for the latest episode! Really enjoyed it as always!

Have a great time at NAMM chaps!

I am a musician or should I say producer with cerebral palsy. I use my nose to input my iPad. I think Nano Studio is amazing.

Sonic guys, you have suggested a few times now that the MPC Ren is more than a controller and audio interface. Its Maschine with audio and rapper hype, but NI already own that market.

OrangeMIC 13-Jan-12 09:28 PM

I would just like to chime in here and say that I for one really appreciate you guys doing this show. Kudos. I am holding off for an iPad 3, but I can't wait to play around with all of the great apps you've been reviewing... especially Animoog!! Cheers.

I really get a lot from your episodes and wanted to say thanks for putting them together and sharing all your knowledge. I am a newbie to a lot of this electronic music creation but have put together a pretty good collection of devices and apps. Can you recommend a good book or site for anybody getting started in home recording and electronic music?

cyberzodiak 13-Jan-12 06:06 PM

I fully agree to Gaz's choice of his Top Five!

pinksue 13-Jan-12 05:20 PM

The new MPC Renaissance is an audio card / MIDI controller only... no standalone unit... but I am anxious to see what they do for the iPad...

chessdude67 13-Jan-12 04:22 PM

Very cool, Guys! Thank you.

albedo0point39 13-Jan-12 01:18 PM

Interesting show as always guys!

Makes sense being cautious about colds and stuff Nick - I'm looking forward to your NAMM coverage. Hope Gaz gets well soon.

qtipcore 13-Jan-12 11:15 AM

Soo... Have you guys tried the iXiMix apps? The Liveremote and XMIX - Logic Edition - They work really well!
