Eric Clapton Isolated Guitar Track 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'

Hear Clapton's solo in solo 08-Feb-12

This was uploaded to YouTube last year, but has so far completely passed me by. It's Eric Clapton's isolated guitar track from George Harrison's 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', and it is absolutely astounding.

Of course it isn't just Eric, it sounds like some Clapton overdubs and some rhythm parts from John Lennon, but I wasn't present at that particular recording session so it's hard to be sure!

The rhythm tone certainly doesn't sound much like a strat, so it may have been Clapton on Les Paul, or John on the Epiphone Casino.

Either way, it's beautiful, and very inspiring for any guitarist to hear. I wouldn't usually post a year-old video as a news item, but the video needs to be heard by more people than the 9000 who have currently viewed it on YouTube.

The uploader has also, either by pure chance or on purpose, uploaded the video to YouTube on February 25th. Beatles buffs will know that this was George Harrison's birthday, so that feels like as good a reason as any.

Please 'like' our Facebook page for more videos such as this one. If any Amped readers out there have links to any more classic isolated guitar tracks, then please do not hesitate to post your links in the comments section of this article, or on our Facebook page.

I'd be surprised if Lennon is on this track --- just my opine.

Paul    Said...

To the best of my knowledge Lennon didn't play on the track at all.

Yeah I thought that as well, but it just doesn't sound like the same guitar to me all the way through. That could well be a production thing though, and I'm sure that George only played acoustic on this, so the only other option would Lennon.

It was just a thought, and I'd love to find out for sure if there is anybody in the know about this!

Thanks for the comments guys,

Rich.

At the time of this recording, Clapton was still relying mainly on Gibsons, and hadn't adopted the Strat as his go-to guitar. In fact, it was recorded before Cream had disbanded. Several accounts have him playing a Les Paul on this recording.

When isolated it sounds so human! This is an example of the art of mixing. When mixed, this guitar track ascends to the heavens.

TeamMastaPr2 28-Apr-12 10:57 PM

I read that on The Beatles Bible, reliable source.

97alvinho 28-Apr-12 10:07 PM

do you read eric clapton's auto biograph? there he said that

TeamMastaPr2 27-Apr-12 09:14 PM

Who gave you that information?

97alvinho 27-Apr-12 08:24 PM

wrong, EC: Lead guitar GH: rhythm gutar and BASS GUITAR and vocal Ringo: Drums George played bass because paul and lennon doesn't accept record on the same studio or in the same time

sitarbob 03-Mar-12 11:44 AM

More than likely a Leslie. You know how the Beatles loved putting stuff through a Leslie... Clapton, too...

nowheremanlaplata 22-Feb-12 08:14 AM

wow, when god ascended into heaven

zandermagic 12-Feb-12 06:07 PM

This is so cool. Love it.

zandermagic 12-Feb-12 06:05 PM

Pretty much the same if you were to isolate any guitar track, even now.

Gupps0123456 12-Feb-12 02:23 PM

Double tracked, like many of the beatles tunes

JChoneybell 12-Feb-12 01:12 PM

Guitar player's line-up: Eric Clapton: electric lead guitar George Harrison: acoustic rhythm guitar (heard in the beginning on this video) Paul McCartney: electric bass guitar John Lennon: an electric guitar part during the chorus following the bass line (not heard here)

dhowardair 10-Feb-12 09:06 AM

Bravo. Spectacular.

bizu1 09-Feb-12 05:44 PM

can you multitrack anything with equalizers or filters or is this already isolated from the source?

j9o9h9n9n9y9 09-Feb-12 05:22 PM

This track is a Les Paul, all on one track. If it were Lennon's, it would (a) have a different tone and (b) carry on at even one point when the lead lines come in. But it doesn't.

j9o9h9n9n9y9 09-Feb-12 05:18 PM

Yes, the one George dubbed "Lucy".

j9o9h9n9n9y9 09-Feb-12 05:18 PM

Absolutely. You can hear it's a Les Paul sound too.

sirgerry 09-Feb-12 04:43 PM

Is that a huge phaser?

diluvnman 09-Feb-12 02:58 PM

that is funny..Eric dubbs on his stratocaster...this is way before EC ever played strats.

TheCowboySantos 09-Feb-12 10:50 AM

vibrato. its what separates the men from the boys. ungh

sduckwor 20-Jan-12 08:11 PM

It's Impressionism.

daijones101 17-Jan-12 11:15 AM

Answer to the guitar argument, it was the red Les Paul standard that Eric used and gave to George as a present afterwards. The guitar is featured in the revolution clip.

bgumbyguitar 13-Jan-12 03:01 AM

What makes you think he used a Strat?

duraznillo97 30-Dec-11 07:10 AM

awesome! completely awesome!

AMP750309 12-Dec-11 12:31 AM

OOOOOWWWHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

slamcrank 18-Sep-11 04:27 AM

Wanna bet?

slamcrank 18-Sep-11 04:27 AM

There is -- It's called "Recording The Beatles", but it's out of print, as far as I recall... and it's quite expensive if you can find a copy.

dawei4321 18-Sep-11 02:45 AM

This is not Eric isolated. That is a guarantee.

MonkeySeeism 14-Sep-11 04:46 AM

The more I hear of these dissected tracks the more respect I have for George Martin, Geoff Emerick, and Norman Smith. GM especially.

beeroosterm 13-Sep-11 09:15 PM

On second thought, it might not be a good thing to peek behind the green curtain. Amazing what the production yielded from such simple parts. The Beatles (don't forget George Martin as well) were truly the definition of synergy...

beeroosterm 13-Sep-11 09:12 PM

Sounds like an awful lot of trouble to obtain a sound that you can easily have nowadays for cheap.

skaboosh 13-Sep-11 07:44 PM

Apparently a Levell Transistor Oscillator TG 150 was used as well..."Chris Thomas was the one who wobbled the Levell TG150 oscillator to modulated the BTR-2 tape speed" - there must be a book that details this.....

beeroosterm 11-Sep-11 04:57 PM

The delay sound is created using Leslies? Sounds like a modern delay/chorus unit. I love having this isolated track. How many guitarists for decades have yearned for this? Thank you so very much (like having secret access to the masters)

LMiquelez 30-Aug-11 05:28 PM

is god??

DukeIrritable 05-Aug-11 05:59 AM

Sound like the Leslie was briefly switched to High Speed.

DOGGYSAW 02-Jul-11 10:55 PM

Just incredible.

mtsn 20-Jun-11 12:39 AM

for a brief (very brief) moment it seems that there are 2 leslies at once.

FRUUBIES 19-Jun-11 09:01 PM

Thank you.
