Here's the press release with all the details...
Lennon's music has inspired artists and engineers the world over, and this fantastic tribute honors him in a way only Music City can. Marcantonio, now a resident of Nashville and a prominent member of the music community there, was an engineer on John Lennon's final album before his passing in 1980. He remarked, "John and Yoko had just left the studio and within an hour the news was on tv. His career was a big influence on my career. Working with him and Yoko was probably the most special time that I have spent in the studio."
In 2010, Marcantonio had to have emergency stomach surgery. He was in the hospital for a week and out of work for 3 months. The Nashville Engineer's Relief Fund (NERF) helped to get him back on his feet financially.
Marcontonio explained how the album project came about: "While home recovering I received a call from a journalist doing a story about John Lennon. 2010 was the anniversary of both John's birth and unfortunate death. I spoke with the journalist for about 15 minutes and when I got off the phone my wife Carrie inquired as to what the conversation was all about. When I told her, she commented how it is that nobody had ever done a tribute record to John Lennon. It hit me like a bolt of lightening and that's when the whole project came to me. It actually helped in my recovery because I couldn't wait to get started."
Through the help of Jack Douglas, the producer of Double Fantasy, he was able to get in touch with Yoko Ono, who gave her blessing for the project, which allowed 100% of the proceeds to go to NERF.
NERF supports the audio engineers who work tirelessly to make records for artists, big and small, in Nashville. "John had a real affinity for the sound engineer," Marcantonio recalled. "He was really good to all of us and very respectful of us as we made records with him. He would definitely approve of this project. I know that's why Yoko gave us the green light."
Marcantonio, who served as executive producer of the project, assembled a team, including Sharon Corbitt-House of Ben's Studio and Nicole Cochran of NERF, and the project proceeded throughout 2010 and 2011. All artists, studios, musicians, and engineers involved in the project donated their time and were extremely enthusiastic about it. "Recording this project reminded me of why I love living and working in Nashville," Marcantonio stated, "It is truly about the music, and hopefully our hard work will shine through in these recordings."
Thanks in part to NERF, Marcantonio has been able to go on with a notable career, working with an impressive list of artists including Rosanne Cash, Rodney Crowell, Vince Gill, Deana Carter, Taylor Swift and Lionel Ritchie.
