Some studio monitor manufacturers cut corners by using digital amplifier cards with no headroom. Sonodyne, in contrast, incorporates high quality class A/B amplifiers with big, classic power supplies, which clip smoothly, produce higher outputs and generate fewer artifacts than digital amplifiers.
The active, bi-amped SM 200AK, which offers smooth reproduction from 40 to 22,000 Hz, includes room-compensating bass and treble tilts (-2 dB, -4 dB, -6 dB @ 100Hz, and -2 dB @ 15 kHz, respectively), bass roll-off (70 Hz, 6 dB/octave) and +/- 6 dB input sensitivity settings, selected via four DIP switches. The electronics enable the user to manage difficult acoustical environments and compensate for quarter (corner), half (wall) and full space positioning of the monitors.
The SM 200AK shares the high quality design and construction attributes of the smaller monitors in the Reference Series. The non-parallel enclosure side walls reduce standing waves and the interior is specially treated to minimize ringing. The gently curving edges of the rigid aluminum die-cast front baffle minimize diffraction while the customized tweeter waveguide ensures precise, dimensional imaging with exceptional on- and off-axis response. Taken together, these design features contribute to the SM 200AK's open high-end, honest mid-range and tight low frequency reproduction.
The SM 200AK measures 12.4 in. (314 mm) high x 16.9 in. (430 mm) wide x 12.7 in. (322 mm) deep. The net weight is 39.2 lb (17.8 kg).
