The latest Zimmer scored blockbuster (doesn't anyone else ever get to do it?) Superman, Man of Steel - released in the US in June of this year, features the usual Hans Zimmer score, but as someone who has access to pretty much every synthesizer ever made, he's turned again to some unusual instrument makers and sound sources to create a more off piste palette of sounds.

This video features percussionist/sculpture/instrument designer Chas Smith who's creations are really out there.

His instruments, generally created from metals that are left over, found or repurposed (Chas's rules apparently) create some truly amazing sounds. from low D to complex metalic tones using plates and sheets to resonate.

Some incredible stuff in here and you can tell that some of these instruments generate enormous levels of sound, the camera audio being unable to cope at times.

Interestingly, I can't seem to find any other reference to Chas Smith online apart from his work with Zimmer - maybe you can?
