Picture Rory Gallagher and you'll think of him rocking that legendary battered and beaten old Stratocaster, but Gallagher had a sizeable collection of guitars.

One of them, a limited edition Patrick Eggle JS Berlin Legend, has been sold for a whopping $42,000 (£25,000). The guitar was sold at an auction in Cumbria, in the north of England.

Gallagher's was number 30 of 150 models made, and his was customised with "RG" initials on the 12th fret.

The lucky winner of the auction was an anonymous foreign bidder, who was bidding via proxy during the sale at the 1818 auction house.

Kevin Kendal of 1818 Auctioneers, told the BBC: "It was very exciting sale."

But when pressed further on the identity of the winner, he said:

"The buyer was from outside the UK, but I'm not able to reveal who that is."

Rory Gallagher has a number of high profile celebrity fans, such as Eric Clapton and Brian May, though it is unknown if any well-known guitarists were bidding on the item.

Even Prince Charles had a look at the guitar, but with the buyer's residence being outside of the UK, we'll have to rule him out of our search for the lucky winner:

The Irish blues guitarist passed away in 1995, and many of his guitars and amps have subsequently been sold by dealers in the UK.
